So I kind of wonder what it would be like to get into a japanese party (late at night if I have to). Like, friday night I'd look for party, put up "Japanese" and set as a comment that I'm a north american looking for some variety.

Any idea how I could do that as a level 16 whm, provided that I have food items, good gear and everything?

Well, the best way to get a nice JP party going is to start a PT yourself. Most JP wont refuse an invite if you're sure to send a tell as well. It's good to ask the following:

sumimasen, ima ojikan arimasuka? - Excuse me, do you have a moment?

isshou ni PT kumimasenka? - Would you like to put a party together, together? (Wow, my translations suck. Basically it's "do you want to join my PT?")

If they respond in hiragana/katakana/kanji, you can tell them:

Sumimasen, sore o yomenai. romaji de kaite kudasai. - I'm sorry, I can't read that. Please type in romaji (english letters).

It's not good to be too demanding of your party or anything like that, so I wouldn't suggest using this too much, as a lot of Japanese players may feel threatened at having to change how they need to communicate... but if you're really having that bad of a problem, you can as this:

eigo o hanasemasu ka? - Can you speak English?

eigo o ********* kudasai. - Please speak English.

Or, if you feel lucky, since you speak French, Une... ^^ I can almost guarantee Japanese people will know more English than French, but you never know!

furansugo o hanasemasu ka? - Can you speak French?

furansugo o ********* kudasai. - Please speak French.

As far as setting up a good comment goes, you could say (and I really suggest using the auto translator...):

(Food)=(Meat Mithkabobs[or whatever])
JP/EN PT ok (I don't speak any Japanese.)
iroiro na PT o sasotte kudasai. (Please invite me to a party with some variety.)

Now, I can't guarantee you'll get a JP PT all the time. But, well, luck to ya! If I'm on and you need translation help, just ask me. Verence and Ayvaen tend to do that a lot. >.>

Hey Kaahi your LS mate is here to support you! LOL

I agree with what Kaahi said. With very few exceptions, Japanese people usually accept gladly to join my parties (or invite me to theirs), as long as we show a mutual amount of effort on communicating together.

I can read kana fairly well but my vocabulary is not that diverse since I haven't had anyone to speak Japanese with in nearly ten years. Here are my observations based on my experiences:

- Use auto-translator as much as possible since its more natural for them to read the messages in Kanji... they will do the same when speaking with you, and *sometimes* when talking between themselves so you can understand;

- I use romaji to participate in their discussions as much as I can. It usually provokes interest and they start talking to me in English or French and we end up having a great time chatting between fights;

- This goes for regular parties as well: Show them that you know what you are doing, and be open for suggestions. As a SMN I often was asked to buff the party up en end up doing nothing else (at least before the patch). So when I asked if I could help with the fight, I usually was answered: "Some elemental magic please".

- And yeah, using food in fights shows that you are not afraid to spend GIL to help with the EXPing. (I leveled Cooking to make pineapple juice between fights for this exact reason).

Take care!
