According to Reddit, it started on July 4th. Smiley: lol

I have difficulty believing Steam would send an email confirming the start date in a support email.

That said, I'd also be surprised if it didn't start tomorrow. It has always started on a Thursday, and if it doesn't start tomorrow, it'll be the latest start date for the sale yet.

Good thing I have a long weekend to not play all the new games I'm going to buy. Smiley: laughSmiley: laughSmiley: laugh

Supposedly there was no weekly sale this week either which makes people confident for this week.

I don't follow the Steam regular sale schedule well enough to know if the absence of a weekly is relevant.

Amazon summer sale was hella lame, GMG was pretty weak and GG hasn't had anything much yet. Unless Steam busts out with amazing sales, I'm going to be able to make a solid dent in my backlog before the winter sale season.

If by weekly sale they mean the Midweek Madness, it's Half Life...

Is there normally a week sale on top of that?

They mean the weekend deals, which would normally be up by now.

I'd bet most things you'd want from the steam sale have been cheaper elsewhere already.

Yeah i was just being 'that guy'. :P

with all the digital download sites out there now I find it very hard to get excited about the steam summer sale. And it appears a lot of people are getting excited about the steam sale. I've already blown through most of my steam wishlist through other sites. /shrug

I think that a lot of people just don't constantly look for game deals, and the Steam summer sale is an event to them, where they can get a bunch of games for cheap.

The excitement around the SSS was never getting stuff on your wishlist, it was getting a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't on your wishlist for a great price.

Take your reason elsewhere.

...I tried to find the Penny Arcade comic to this effect, but no luck.

I don't hoard games (though I still haven't installed TR or B:I Smiley: lol). I usually only buy something if I plan on playing it immediately. **** goes on sale so often nowadays that I don't feel the need to buy stuff for the future.

I wish I had that willpower. My problem is that I never have any clue what I'm going to want to play, and a strong desire to stretch my gaming budget as far as it will go.

I have 71 games in my Steam library (with my most-played games, meaning Mass Effect and Dragon Age, being in Origin).

Some of them I'm slowly working through, like Torchlight and Trine. When I finish the originals, I'll install the sequels (which I already own). Others I'll play more typically, once I get to them.

Of course, this would work a lot better if I'd stop replaying games. Right now, I'm going through FFXIII (mostly because I just bought FFXIII-2, and might buy Lightning Returns). But I've played a lot of Dragon Age. And I've run through Mass Effect 2-3 times now (though only played ME3 once so far).

Downside of playing a lot of RPGs, I guess.

I can't be assed with having a bunch of different accounts to buy games all over the web for 2 dollars cheaper. Besides the security concerns with personal info at yet another WeGamesU.ru. So I mostly use Steam since its convenient and the majority of my games are there. Except for when EA is a **** and takes away ME and DA so I have to use never to be bothered with again Origin.

I do support the competition these new sites bring to the market to drive down overall prices though.

So yeah, looking forward to summer sale!

To each their own. No one here listing deals from shady Russian key scan merchants or anything. GMG, Amazon & GG are all good sized legitimate merchants. For that matter, so are Gamestop, Gamefly, etc.

Having accounts doesn't bother me. I suppose I could make a legitimate argument for all the $2 and $3 savings adding up but, really, I just enjoy the metagame of getting the best price. Or the times when I get a substantial saving.

Absolutely. Not trying to insult your bargain hunting Joph. I read this thread everyday. I was mostly just trying to justify my laziness I think. And my excitement for summer sale.

I might actually buy a game from one of those other places someday. Smiley: tongue

No offense taken.

One place where the other places can shine is pre-orders and new releases. If you're looking to play something on release or soon after it's very easy to find a better deal than Steam (who usually isn't discounting it at all) and 20% or 25% off a $60 game is enough money to take notice. If you want something right away, you might as well at least not pay full price.

TF2 and Dota 2 (which just went live out of beta and people should totally play) just added their Summer items in today's updates.

Brace yourselves. Sale live tomorrow.

Edit: Looks like it goes live 10 AM PDT. The prophet has spoken. Gaben cometh.

The nice part of Dota 2 is that EVERYONE starts off terrible, and continues to be terrible for months. But the matching system does a decent job of putting you with other terrible people, so you don't notice just how bad you are. Smiley: grin

It's also sufficiently different from LoL that you might like it more. Or less. I was just reading an article yesterday that was trying to break down the differences between the two games from an experiential stand point. Lemme see if I can find it... Success.

At the end of the day, I'd say the skill curve is much steeper with Dota 2. But since I think it does a better job of matching people than LoL does, I find that the experiential skill curve seems kinder. It doesn't really matter that you suck if the game is reliably placing you with other player who suck a relatively similar amount.

They're different enough that there's plenty of reason to end up preferring one over the other.
