Horses and fast travel?Follow

#1 Oct 01 2005 at 6:32 PM Rating: Decent
Hello my question is about horses, I have never played this game before and right now im playing FFX1 and we have chocobos that u rent for a certain amount of time for fast travel.

I would like to know if horses work the same way, or do u own your own horse and how long can u ride it? I also heard that u can fight on your horses so i assume that u can ride them for a long time but im not sure how that works anyway.

I dont have a horse, but you own them when you by them and you can battle on top of one. They last quit a while, I was grouped with a wizard that remained on his horse the entire time we were grouped togeather. So I think they last till you dismiss them.

Yes, horses are purchased so you get to keep them and use them all the time. When you summon your horse, it can be ridden for 24 hours or until you dismiss it.

There is no refresh timer on a horse so if you wanted to, you could summon then dismiss and then re-summon all together, with no penalty and no waiting.

The horse itself is actually just a whistle that goes in one of your character's two activatable slots. Click on the whistle, (I keep mine down in one of my hot bars), and you cast the summoning spell.

Yes, you can fight from horseback and IMHO, it is very cool looking. If I am soloing my warden, I never leave horseback unless I need to go for a swim. When grouped, I tend to ride if everyone else is and dismiss if one or more group members are without mounts. (Horses are so much faster than running that you will leave unmounted group members in the dust when you travel.) I don't see any penalty from fighting on horseback but a monk friend of mine claims he doesn't do as much damage when mounted.

Now the downside... first, horses are VERY expensive so it's not something that you could afford with a low level first character. Even if you are in a guild and buy one with personal status points (guild experience), you are looking at well over one platinum in cash plus the PSP for the lowest level horse available.

(The exception to this is the level 20 fluff spell for Pallys and SKs. For a few silver, this spell will grant you a nice looking mount with a 10% speed increase. The hook is that you can only do this if you are a lvl 20 Paladin or Shadow Knight.)

Second, horses are no-trade meaning that the person who buys the horse is the only person who can ever ride it. If you want to "trade up", to a better quality of horse, you can re-sell it to the stable where you bought it, but you can never sell it to another player.

And third, they cannot be ridden into the water. If you attempt to cross a river, lake, or enter the ocean, the horse will un-summon automatically. Not a big deal but something to be aware of.

On the plus side, the horse never needs to be fed or watered, never takes damage. and does not react to battle in any way. In addition, I think they have really cool annimations and make great sounds. They also look really neat when you "jump" them over an object.

One last thing, you can't ride a horse in any of the "home" villages. There must be an ordinance against it! This keeps horses out of the banks, (which was always a problem in EQ). You can however ride in Queynos and Freeport proper and of course, you can ride in any combat zone.

There is a great article showing what all the different horses look like, what the different speed boosts are and how much they cost. It is located HERE

Good luck and happy trails...

For a few silver each (on my server, at least) you can buy Spirit Totems of the Wolf with 7 30 minute charges that give you a 24% (?) run speed boost. I can buy a couple thousand totems for the price of a starter horse. Why would I want to waste over a platinum?

Maybe it's just me. I've never felt compelled to buy a horse in any MMO I've played, even EQ1 where they had a real benefit to casters (sitting mana regen all the time).

I also think EQ2 horses look too much like My Little Pony (tm), stubby and fat. ;)

I have to agree with Lyd on this one. I would rather spend my money on Totems. They are just as fast as the T1 horses and a lot cheaper. Plus, you look really cool in wolf form.

I actually got tired of always looking like a wolf when running around - people would never know who I really am. So I just turn off the illusion and go zipping past them like a Olympic runner. :)

I never bothered with mounts while I was in EQ. The characters I played all had SoW or Selos and since I didn't play pure casters I never felt like I really needed a horse.

Here in EQ2, I got a (T2) horse for my warden and have been very happy with it. So much so that I am considering getting one for both my ranger and my fury.

Besides, it's not just about speed... for me it's also about style and trust me on this, my warden on horseback looks GOOD!!!

That is going to be my main concern. I don't think I am going to be winning any style points as a Dwarven Guardian decked out in full plate riding a donkey. The kids might make fun of me

That was one of the good things about being a dirge, I used to have 40% run, but at least we were left with 34%. Not much need for a horse since I can out run most of them, especially once I decide to turn in my JM boot quest.

It always bothered me that the dirge spells are faster then the horses. For that reason I am not saving for a carpet cuz I hear thats the fastest you can get. To bad its around 100 plat I think. I only have 1.5p so far so long ways off but then again im only lvl 34 so my horse will do for now.

They got rid of some of their advanteges, and added the ability to troubs. But it help differentiate them from other scouts. Dirges have the worst stealth in the game, it is self only, slows us down quite a bit, and still takes 2 seconds to cast which makes it almost usless for us to use our stealth attack in battle. The other scouts have more stealth advanteges the bards do.

It also makes sense for bards to be the fastest, besides the precidents in EQOA and EQ. Bards are travelers, one of the basis for bards is the go from one place to another to spread news and song.
