a maimed erudite appears to be even worse off than the others around this dreary nightmare. Crumbled up and held tight in his hand appears to be a [piece of paper] with writing upon it.

You say, 'piece of paper'

You pick up and flatten out what appears to be a good-bye letter to his family, which never made it to them. Some of the words cannot be made out due to being covered by a thick black liquid similar to the consistancy of the lurkers about. However, looking back to the body, you also notice the [claw marks] covering his extremities.

You say, 'claw marks'

The marks on the body seem as though they've been created by an animal, although experience of making it into the nightmare this far, it had to have been a mephit. Void of other emotions in the coldness of the Palace, this piece of paper shows significant life. Could it be a [calling]?
