In-Game Text

Description

You must have a Great Axe skill of at least 240 and be at least level 71 to begin this quest. If you're ready to accept the mission, head to Bastok Metalworks and speak with Iron Eater.

He will hand you a key item as well as a great axe, the Axe of Trials. He instructs you to master the axe by weakening it's powers, which roughly means you need to remove the latent effect off of it by participating in skillchains and performing weapon skills. The number of SCs and WSs you need to do before the sword is sufficiently weakened goes by a strict point-based system:

Solo-WS or opening any level SC: 1 pt.

Close LVL1 SC: 2 pt.

Close LVL2 SC: 3 pt.

Close LVL3 SC: 5 pt.

- Total Needed: 300 pt.

-

Participate in SCs until you've accumulated enough points for the latent effects on the Axe of Trials to dissappear. (Note: the text on the item description will remain, but the effects will expire)

After the latent effects are off of the Axe of Trials, return to Iron Eater and trade him the Axe of Trials. He will hand you yet another key item and tell you to proceed to the Sanctuary of Zitah.

Head to (F-6) and touch the ??? there. An NM treant named Greenman will appear. Defeat him. Once Greenman is dead, check the ??? again to receive yet another key item.

Now head back to Metalworks and speak w/ Iron Eater again. After a short cutscene, you will receive your long-awaited prize: Steel Cyclone!

Hey, I don't really wanna do my Pick of trial for decimation. Only has a few points. If I drop it right away, can i get the Axe of trial just by talking to Iron eater? I mean of course i fulfill those requirement (GA 240 and lvl 75)

Anybody know?

Just trioed this NM with 75NIN/WAR 75WHM/NIN 66BST/WHM.

I just used standard paralyze, blind, and slow Ninjustsu debuffs
and had to keep shadows up cause he hits hard(hardest was 500+).
The fight only took about 3-5 minutes so not bad at all.

Wheres the WS reviews?!
# Jun 21 2007 at 4:03 AM Rating: Decent
I REALLY hate how everyone on "WS Trial forums" never really make ANY effort to review the actual weaponskill you're unlocking.... What kind of DMG does it do? IS it worth the effort? Well, after spending quite some time on this WS, I finally got it, and I have to say, I'm TERRIBLY unimpressed. STR and VIT are supposed to be major modifiers for this WS... so I geared myself with STR +37, and Vit +25, which I feel are VERY respectable numbers. Also, Considering I'm Elvaan, I dont exactly LACK STR or VIT to begin with...

I tried this ws on "Too Weak" Mobs in Western Altepa Desert using Gawain's Axe (Dmg 91, which is pretty RObust), and I was typically doing 480-600 with 100% tp, or 800-900 with "Sneak Attack + Steel Cyclone" with 100% tp. To me, this is RIDICULOUS, because I can do more dmg WITHOUT SA as an RDM on an EVisceration WS <.< In any case, on the BRIGHT side, I tried this on VT/IT mobs, and it seemed to have about the same resulting dmg as it did fighting "Too Weak" mobs. That kind of confuses me, considering the higher level mobs are naturally going to have MUCH higher defense (yes, mobs defense and your attack is ALWAYS a factor on WS's, not just the base stat modifiers), but I wont complain about it.

The ONLY thing I can see this being good for is if you are war/thf and doing an HNM/God, and you dont want to feed it lots of TP by dual-wielding weapons and using multi-hit weapons skills, because steel cyclone is a single hit WS, and does DECENT dmg without feeding a lot of TP. The other nice thing is... if you wait until 300% tp, this ws does a LOT more damage (3.00x normal dmg modifier), but honestly, who really waits for 300% tp?! @.@ All in all though, for MY purposes as warrior, I think this ws was a complete waste of time to unlock, and unless you do TONS of HNM as war/thf and have a 75 sam thats a good friend to help you unlock it, then I wouldnt bother.

its all about the 300% sata ws.

martial bhuj and this WS go together like .....

well two things that go really well together.. milk and cookies?....

Well yeah if you dont want to save to 300% martial bhuj is the way to go, i got consisent 1300 - 1500 dmg on optical hat mob between 100-200tp.

SATA if course, STR +54 VIT +22.

gl anyway, its honestly a great ws =]

First try fought as:
70Pld/War
72War/Nin (me)
73Drk/War
75Whm/Blm

We almost won. I died with the mob at 12% life. That's was our main downfall. After that not enough dmg was done, Whm and Pld were out of MP and the 3 of them died with the mob at 2% life.

Fought 2nd time as:
70Pld/War
72War/Nin (me)
73Drk/War
75Whm/Blm
60Whm/Smn
68Rdm/Blm

Easy fight, no problems at all, no one was low on MP or HP.
______________________________________________________________________________

1st Steel Cyclone at 100% TP did 556. 2nd Steel Cyclone at 200% TP did 865. And I accidently had /Blm sub.

I'm AMAZED that NO ONE here has posted ANYTHING about the review of the WS (Steel Cyclone) that you have to work so hard to get by doing this quest - just how people have trouble getting the quest, and how to unlock it - WHO CARES - if the ws sucks?!?! Is it WORTH making all this effort to unlock? WHat kind of damage does it do in an exp/merit pt vs VT/IT? I"m sure some people will say "Oh, well... even if it does suck, it can make this SC, or that SC..." Once again WHO CARES?! in 99.9% of merit pt's, no one SC's anyway... I would LOVE it if someone woudl post some raw numbers of what this can do, and comparisons to other WS's, liek Raging Rush, and Sturmwind...

You want a review? I'll give you one.

Steel Cyclone has its uses, but in a merit PT it's useless unless you save to 250%+.

However this WS is perfect if you want to zerg something and kill it in a hurry.. 300% TP + Berserker's axe + Warrior Charge + Mighty Strikes will easily do 2,200-2,400 to stuff that doesn't have high DEF.

Worth getting? Yes, if you plan to do any sort of endgame.

If you use Great axes in merit parties, just sub SAM and spam raging rush. With Berserker's it usually does 600-900 without a double attack, over 1k if you get a DA. Highly recommend a Martial Bhuj since it pretty much gives you a extra 100% TP. That equates to a few extra hundred damage on RR.

Truthfully I rarely use Great axe in parties unless I get double marches and a haste. It's then that I start catching up with other axe WARs.

I dare say someone with a full haste build, max great axe merits and a Martial Bhuj would be able to outparse a lot of jobs.. especially with with songs and haste spell.

Just saying what I think of GA.. It has its uses like most of everything else, but as of now it is usually inferior to dual wielded weapons.

Perhaps SE will give 2 handed weapons another boost?

I've sent a correction request to change the point tallies to:

Start LVL2 SC: 1 pt.
Close LVL2 SC: 3 pt.

Start LVL3 SC: 1 pt.
Close LVL3 SC: 5 pt.

You never get more than 1 point for opening a skillchain. This might explain some people's overestimation of their points.

I have confirmed it. I had a GA skill of 240 and Iron Eater would not give me the quest. I had Decimation open and my LS help me beat Yallery Brown. Headed straight for Iron Eater after learning Decimation and got the Axe of Trials.

3-5 points
# Oct 07 2005 at 3:08 AM Rating: Decent
I kept extremely careful track how how many points we were getting according to these figures (3 to open a lvl 3 skillchain, 5 to close) doing Darkness with a Pld, taking turns opening and closing-and I found that we were FAR past the 300 number before the latent FINALLY disappeared. So, that simply can NOT be right. Darkness is a lvl 3 sc, yes? Yeah well...doing it that many times, counting up each and every one...we did over 350 by the time it disappeared. So...this needs to be looked over again, I think.

Assuming you were doing Full Break -> Swift Blade you'd have been getting 1 or 5 points.

1 point for doing a WS solo (the openner) and 5 for closing. You get 3 for closing a level 2 skillchain. The game has to award point when you do your skill, not later, so when you do your skill the game can't know if your doing a skill chain or just doing a solo WS.

Which means for every 2 WS you thought you were getting 8 points, but you really only got 6. 300/8 = 37.5 and 300/6 = 50. So you did 50-37.5 = 12.5 more WS pairs than you thought you had too which would be by your counting an even 100 more points than you thought you needed.

Don't bet too much on that theory. I had 61 L3 closers on my Pick of Trials, which amounts to 305 points alone, but I still needed 36 Solo WSes and 15 L3 Openers to get rid of the latent.

Also, it wouldn't be a difficult thing for S/E to check if a WS is opening a chain. Besides, if the game couldn't tell if the WS would create an SC then there wouldn't be any SCs at all.

--edit--
I just worked off the latent FINALLY and I tracked them meticulously.

Solos: 248 x1 point each
L1 Open: 1 x1 point each
L1 Close: 6 x2 points each
L2 Open: 2 x2 points each
L2 Close: 8 x3 points each
L3 Open: 39 x3 points each
L3 Close: 17 x3 points each

Which works out to 399 points. So quite likely the cap for this weapon at the very least is 400 points.

There is also the fact that these skillchains must be preformed on an easy prey + mob in order for the Sc to register as points.

The point tally for opening a level 2-3 skillchain is wrong. It should be

Start LVL2 SC: 1 pt.
Close LVL2 SC: 3 pt.

Start LVL3 SC: 1 pt.
Close LVL3 SC: 5 pt.

You never get more than one point for opening a SC, period.

Just fought this NM yesterday with this set up:
71 War/Nin (me)
71 Brd/Whm Cheroni
71 Rng/Nin Genais
71 Rdm/Blm Yoshiyama
71 Whm/Smn Iyaesuyori

(Everyone except the Rdm is in my static, so we know each other's routine very well =P)

We also had a 64 Mnk/War but he DCed pretty early into the fight.

I put on full AF and def food and tanked the entire fight. With Haste + Elegy + Slow Greenman was very easy to blink tank even with just Utsusemi Ichi. The only real threat was when it uses Leaf Storm which takes out 2 - 3 shadows at once. When shadows are down, it hits me for 150 - 200 damage and 250 critical (that's with 450 def and +15 vit), however with Haste + Elegy + Slow I can get shadows up within 1 - 2 hits after Leaf Storm. No one was ever in serious danger of dying except me whos HP dropped to 500 two to three times after the Greenman double attacked + WS, but other than that, really easy fight.

Heres to any future War's planning to get this kickass WS. It's definitely possible to tank this NM yourself pre lvl 74, but just make sure you have a Rdm and Brd to cast Elegy and Slow, as well as keeping you hasted the entire fight.

This was my set-up

75 PLD
70 WHM
70 RDM
75 DRK/THF
72?? DRK/WAR (forgot exact level)
74 MNK
71 WAR/NIN Me

We got to the site and cleared the area of bones and junk to get TP. Once we were all ready I popped the NM.

The fight started out ok. We were going to do Asuran Fist >>> Ground Strike. Don't ask me why, but I forgot to check the SJ on one of the DRK and thought he was a /THF so I asked him to do Ground Strike instead of the DRK/THF.

Anyway, the lvl 75 is an RL friend of mine. He sent me a tell "Get behind mob...I'm going to make you tank. LOL" Yeah, so I got behind the mob because I didn't think he was going to do it. Yeap. SATA Ground Strike the mob for about 1500dmg+. So yeah, I died at about 1/4 HP on mob....HAHAHAHA. I didn't care about dying, I just thought it was freaking funny how he went through with it that *******...hehe. He forgot that PLD can't do cover across Alliance...or so we think because the PLD did try to cover me but couldn't. So the PT finished off the mob and I got my R3.

Overall the mob wasn't hard at all. I love the WS. I do have a small complaint though when I SATA. Sometimes the animation for Steel Cyclone doesn't show. It just shows the large dark circle as though I already swung the GAXE. Oh well, it's still an awesome WS compared to Raging Rush. Totally worth the time to get this WS IMO.

Next up....Decimation.

First off, it spawns at the ??? under the sapling at the top left corner of (F-6). The map at ffxi-atlas is WRONG.

The mob isn't so bad. It's a Treant, so it's got alot of HP and good def, and the worst TP attack it has is Leafstorm (AoE damage, pretty good damage too).

We had a PLD tank it, lv 73 Galka without earth staff, it was only doing 150ish per hit.

Only problem was that FFXI decided to boot about 3-4 of us at one point, so the 60some NIN we had started tanking it, until Leaf Storm took him out, orz.

But now I have my Annals of Truth! :D

Here's a tip for anyone out there on this NM. I couldn't find JACK on info for this guy except people commenting on the "sword" mistake. So, here's the facts:

Took him down 2 different times and my pt make up was:

73 nin/war
72 war/nin (me)
73 whm/smn
74 rng/nin
72 drk/thf

The whm had 680ish MP when I spawned it and used Benediction near the end b/c Ninja took some heavy dmg late in the fight. Other than that, very very easy fight. 2nd fight make up was this:

73 nin/war
72 war/nin
71 drk/thf
70 whm/smn
70 rdm/blm

This was a much easier fight than the 1st time. Dunno why, was a different ninja each fight though. He hit me for 200-300 dmg each time (with DD gear and berzerk on) so I'm sure either a pld or nin can tank it np. Ninja was just easy for me to get ^^; Hope this helps you all!
