Questionnaire

Besides Final Fantasy XI, what other MMORPGs have you played and how do they compare to Final Fantasy XI?

None.

How did you find out about Final Fantasy XI, and when did you begin playing?

I've followed the Final Fantasy franchise since playing Final Fantasy II/IV on SNES, in elementary school. I was put off of Final Fantasy XI because I am cheap, but my friend let me make a character on his account and I was quickly hooked. This was some time after Zilart, but before Promathia. When I left for Chicago to go to grad school in 04, I started an account of my own.

Do you know anyone in real life who plays Final Fantasy XI?

My best friend introduced me to it, though he has quit a few times in the past year, and has finally jumped ship toWoW. I've cajoled various friends and acquaintances into starting characters, but they all quit early on due to the overwhelming grind.

How did you come up with your main character's name?

Ever since first seeing the job classes in FFXI I knew I wanted to be a monk. Pahn is a monk in the game Suikoden whose power is so great that he puts down the protagonist's father. I was pleased with the idea of beating up someone's father, so I named my character 'Pahn.' My taru mule, Milich, takes his name from the same game.

What is your favorite job and why?

Monk. I like the simplicity and potency of a character running up to an enemy and barehandedly beating it to death. Something about the job class lends itself to the ridiculous RPG mindset of pursuing greater and greater power for the sole purpose of destroying things more efficiently. I feel like the kind of player who would spend hours capping every offensive stat on, say, Cloud in FFVII, would probably get behind the idea of the monk class. I am also enamored with an idea often found in anime, whereby a character can become so powerful as to actually destroy him-or-herself; ie becoming paradoxically more powerful than oneself. This attitude may sound like it lends itself to the dark knight class, but I contest that it doesn't.

Which forum(s) do you frequent the most?

The MNK, DRG, and SAM forums. I occasionally lurk other job forums, but most of my posts have been on those 3. I used to enjoy the Phoenix server forum, primarily because of the presence of a large amount of ratedown trolls who would sub-default anyone for the mere action of posting on the forum. Nowadays, people seem to abuse the rate function less, and there is no drama, so I've lost interest.

About how often do you play Final Fantasy XI and how long is a typical playing session for you?

I play more or less every day. My play time varies somewhat by whether or not I have a linkshell event, or whether or not I have insomnia. Taking all 7 days of the week into account, I probably play an average of 2 hours a day.

How do you spend your time in game?

Running a Dynamis linkshell, attending HNMls events, talking to social LS people, going to Limbus, XP staticking with friends. I almost never farm, and having capped merits on MNK and SAM, I don't really merit unless I get an invite from someone I like. I do most things on a whim I guess, so it's hard to give a general answer. Often, I solo, stop paying attention, and die.

Do you craft? If so, what are your skill levels?

LV1 woodworking, LV17 fishing. In other words, no.

Approximately how much of Vana'diel have you experienced?

All pre-ToAU missions, half the ToAU missions, endless XP, rank missions, numerous quests, all Dynamis, all Sky/Sea, some small-group ground. I went to someone's in game wedding once.

What is your favorite expansion?

CoP. The story line was strong, the battles difficult, and the rewards great. I haven't had more fun in the game than battling through CoP with my static.

What is your least favorite expansion?

WotG. It doesn't interest me at all. I went to the past to unlock DNC and haven't been back.

How far have you progressed in missions?

See above. I haven't done Windy/Sandy, because I like my outpost warps and the Republic of Bastok too much.

What is your favorite zone?

Phomiuna Aqueducts, for the ladder cutscene.

Who is your NPC hero and why?

Oggbi. Oggbi represents all that is monk. He is a big Galka with obviously limitless power, yet he spends all his time drinking at the inn in Bastok while wearing lv15 gear.

If Shantotto was your mom, give a good excuse for coming home 6 hours after curfew.

"Got lost."

Describe your most memorable moment or proudest accomplishment in game.

Memorable moment? I suppose the first time I put on a JSE subligar. Proudest accomplishment? Finally getting my Dynamis linkshell to beat Dynamis Lord.

What is the largest amount of gil you have ever had at one time, and how did you go about accumulating it?

Probably 5,000,000-10,000,000. I have made all my gil by simply being an opportunist and looking out for (usually low probability) high profit ventures. NM drops, various hustles involving new items. Sometimes I would gamble in Jeuno. I have a problem with vices.

What are some things you would change or implement in order to improve Final Fantasy XI?

I'd like to make a lot more things instanced. A mime class would be nice. I really don't like speculation/suggestion threads or discussion though. I would like it if the game could be changed so that when your character gets hurt, you feel pain in real life. Relatedly, I think it would be good if your characters could smoke. Following that train of thought, it would be good to include a WS/JA like Cid's limit break where he lights a stick of dynamite with his cigarette and then tosses it at the enemy. Also monks should be able to headbutt people.

If you were stranded on Purgonorgo Isle what 5 items would you most want to have with you?

In-game:

  1. Aquarius Subligar
  2. Cleric's Hat
  3. Steam Clock
  4. 4-Leaf Mandragora Bud
  5. Defending Ring

IRL:

  1. Laptop
  2. Power source for laptop
  3. Materials to brew beer
  4. Sunblock
  5. Guns

How do you describe Final Fantasy XI to your coworkers or computer-illiterate friends?

The addiction that ruined my life.

What is next for you in the world of Final Fantasy XI?

Finally get a black belt. Continue justifying to myself not quitting.
