Beat it with MNK68/WAR x2, MNK69/WAR, WHM70/SMN, RDM69/BLM, and BRD67/WHM. I (a 68 MNK) came close to dying a few times getting hit, taking most of the hate from Hundred Fists (2 of the 3 MNKs 2 Hred this, anyone else in the party I can't verify) >.> Hit single digits twice. But no one died thanks to Cure IV spam and some TIMELY hate steals from fellow MNKs. So it's not mega hard, if you're down here in the first place leveling you could possible take it with 2 HRs no problem and some concentration. Bad drops though just the Blizzaga II scroll.
EDIT: Spawns at G-8, around there. We camped at a connecting cave in G-9 or so, right on the lines if you look at a map..
Looks like a pretty good soloing weapon for a DRG. By the time we get this staff we'll get Spirit Taker, and the Ice Spikes would make a noticeable difference when fighting longer battles. The extra +6 to the HB trigger would be nice, too.
I'm surprised no one really posted this yet. o.o I just read _The Inferno_ by Dante for school, and I thought it would be cool to share where the name comes from. For people who don't know, _The Inferno_ is basically the story of a man's (Dante's) trip through Hell; he descends to Hell and sees people who've committed various sins and are stuck in lower and lower levels in Hell and punished based on the severity of their sin.
Cocytus is the name of the lowest level of Hell in _The Inferno_, where people who have betrayed other people are put. For most of the people there, their punishment is to be frozen to some degree in ice. Some people are buried completely in ice, some are just frosted over, etc. So it makes sense that this pole would give an enchantment that covers you in ice.
I'm nowhere high level enough to defeat this mob, or contribute anything useful about the effect, but I thought that that was cool. Go SE for classical literature references.
I figure it's loosely related one way or another, but Cocytus is also (if not originally) one of the five rivers in Hades- the River of Lamentation. Those who aren't buried properly (with a coin) will be refused by the ferryman, Charon, who carries the deceased souls across the river Acheron. Those not burried properly, who don't have the coin, aren't admitted, and are forced to wander the banks of Styx (the river of hate that circles Hades 9 times) and Cocytus for hundreds of years.
Not sure of the Actual <pos> but i can tell you that he/she/it spawns inthe west side Bones Area in the lower map. Go just NE of the west camp there and it will be terrorizing the 58-62 mnk ptys over there.
how the ice spikes effect works: it's just like any additional effect: it goes off randomly, with a standard AE, example AE: Poison, the target is randomly affected by poison as you attack, with this, it works the same way, except when the AE goes off, you gain ice spikes for approximately 1-2 minutes
hmmm. Anyone know how the Ice Spikes effect works? We were leveling in Gustav and killed this guy. PLD lot 100 and I (whm) lot 911. After we are done I did the usual teleport-altep and on the way to Raboe, i equip it and fight some Spiders. Nothing. I did notice a little wierd light (like light staff additional effect). But no additional damage was done. Am I missing something?
btw we got the bow from Dred too. I love it when the LS pts and the level 70 thf is with us. TH2 is so nice.
Black Mages can cast Ice Spikes, so having the effect is only a mild convenience. Stick to a Mahagony Pole if you want the damage, or grab a Master Caster's Pole if you're looking for the hp/mp bonus.
