Heya peopz...

I checked out the expo today after work. It's not a super high tech, lavish setup, of E3, rather it's an admirable venture to promote internet gaming. There are a lot of cool techie booths, some awesome systems, and some featured software that won't be available for a while. The main focus is on first person shooters, as is obvious from the website.

While I was there, I spoke with an organizer. It turns out SE decided to get involved pretty late, however, 2 reps will be flying out to host the event. The gentleman I spoke with, Martin N., said that there will be a 3 hour event beginning at 8p Saturday. In order to participate, you will need to be able to create a new character (by purchasing a new Content ID or deleting a character). World passes will be issued so gamers will all start on the same server. You need to bring your PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. or PS2 (like me) and a television (I actually purchased an adapter for my computer monitor at a nearby computer shop on 39th and 5th for $70).

<<<Hmmm... I'm not suggesting anything illegal or morally wrong... but, I was wondering... there is a Kmart on 34th and 7th that sells televisions... and I wonder, since Kmart has such a forgiving return policy (full refund within 30 days), if people buy televisions, and return them the following day... hmmm... I wonder!?!>>>

Anywho, after the event iGames is hosting an all-nighter for folks that bring their systems. They are providing security, and pizza (not that I'm big on pizza, but Martin kept stressing it). There are some cute gamers with really hot systems, and some hot chics.

For $40 (plus the Content ID if you have to purchase one), I think it's a great opportunity to support OUR COMMUNITY of online gamers, and make a few new friends. I'll be there with my significant other enjoying the festivities. I hope to see some of you there too.

~Nika.
Loads of fun...

Hello again,

I went, had a great time, placed 5th, and won some goodies. Yasu Kurosawa, NA Producer of FFXI, and Franko Fonseca, Assistant Technical Assurance Manager ran the event. It was a "Newbie Run" where participants had to create a new character on the Kujata Server (worldpass provided), and run from Windurst to the Outpost in the Santuary of Zi'Tah.

All forms of Sneak and Invisible were banned, along with Raises, escorts (that were non-participants), and changing Homepoints (which would have been difficult since we started with 50 gil and Meriphataud Mountains was under San d'Orian control). Teleports were allowed although no one utilized them, cures were also, but would have been useless.

Prizes were the FFXI Elvaan Chocobo Cold Cast Statues ($570) for first and second place (I was sooo close to winning... damn Goblins). Copies of Chains of Promathia (being mailed), along with Final Fantasy 2004-2005 13 Month Art Calanders, Drakengard Demos, FFXI/CoP Posters, and Dear Friends T-Shirts from the Nobuo Uematsu concert (May 2004) were also awarded.

All-in-all, it was a great time and I met a some really nice people. Winning the CoP expansion was just icing on the cake. I look forward to the Next iGames and Final Fantasy events.

~N.

Hello Nikaiya ^^

Man it really was tons of fun. I have some info, pics, and scans of the rules we were given in this thread:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=49&mid=109484544684795399&num=4

Man what a great time, I thank you again for all the usefull knowledge that you gave me I really appreciate it.

Overall the event was great, but what was even better were the people involved. The square guys just hung out and were really open to Q&A which was really cool. The people there for the contest were increbible. Very open to sharing strategies for the "newbie run" as well as giving out information based on their experience and jobs.

Overall the contest was great, but it was overshadowed by the Incredible people who build our community of final fantasy...your a real class act guys hope to see you again soon.

#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 09 2004 at 9:38 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) who knows... i dont, they could just want you to make a new content ID (plus the entrance fee) so u have to pay more, and bringing your pc or ps2 to the place?! thats stupid.
Hehe

Don't you think that it might be something where you can get rare items, and MABEY the best and most responsible people might become GMs (since they say that SOME work at home and the others work in a HUGE factory). And who knows? Mabey it'll have some stuff about the Expansion and mabey you get one for free? Buuuuut... All we know now is... Well... I don't know, 'cause I haven't read all the messages or even checked the site.
i dont know bout this
# Sep 09 2004 at 5:14 PM Rating: Default
i dont know bout this i think it will be a waste of time, iof they are giving out a prize that would be cool but prolly nothing big, and its so much work to bring ur ps2 or anything into the city prolly get jacked on the streets, this place is not gonna be to good, because if they wanted alot of ppl they would have mentioned a prize, and how would they buy like 2k tvs+ for all the ps2 players? and will they connect every1 up to 1 network? calls for some major lag and d/c for me. I'd rather just keep playing old gandalv and have a good time ¿peace out?

edit: and i also was thinking isn't 2 days kind of short notice? this sounds like a load of crap to me...

send me your gil

i dont think this is litwerally a race, from what i've gathered from the open characetr slot and calling it a "newbie race" im thinkin that it's pretty much to see who can get the furthest in a certain amount of time

as for prizes, maybe a free copy of CoP?
eh... >.<

oh man, i had high hopes for this when i originally read it. i was thinking more like a bring your jobs, and get together and PT kinda thing, not this "starting a new character" deal >.< oh well, i still might bring my ps2 and maybe get a chance to hook it up somewhere
Alright ...

WTF PS2
# Sep 09 2004 at 12:32 PM Rating: Default
Ok they're having a big competition. What i dont get. Have any of you tried getting to the hammerstein ballroom before? It sucks a$$. Especially if i have to Carry my PC and freakin Monitor with me. It also says for PS2 users to just bring their ps2. Does this mean that they will have TV's available to use but the PCusers have to bring in their own moniters? IDK about you but i got a bad feeling about this.

I'll put in my quess. It's probly a timed race in progression. 8 hours who can get where with what. Most Money, highest lvl, highest Rank (Probly not), some kind of scavenger hunt. They just want a big highlight to the convention so you might get some face time if your lucky and good.

ok FFXI being part of this makes almost no sense to me. For one thing a "race" would be really hard to properly track with the random world placement for new characters. Also unless they have a stipulation requiring all the participants start in the same city theres the chance of some people starting out closer tot he finish line. Depending on where in Vana D'iel they designate as the finish line of course. Another problem would be the possibility of interference or "help" from those of us not at the event

Secondly if it was just a meet and greet deal with other players why make you register a new character?

If any ones find out any specifics post it by all means I won't be there myself but I'm still curious what they have planned. If it is some sort of competition I would imagine the "prize" would be a copy of CoP for the victor and maybe a "I dragged my computer all the way to New York to play FF XI and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" shirt for the runners up

Yeah.

They're probably going to put you in a new server. And maybe make you start in the same place.

I went looking while I was typing up my original I swear that I did see some small mention of FF XI but I went back later and I was either hallucinating or it disappeared in the mean time cuz there was nothin its NOT bogus becuz S-E themselves have it posted on the playonline site

I DID finally find where I saw the small mention on the igamesexpo.com site if you click the BYOC FAQ and scroll down it mentions it in response to question about what games will be part of the event but thats the only place as far as I could tell

Hmm... that's confusing, because if you go the registration page for BYOC, http://www.igames.org/PlayerEventReg.asp?reg=1&LocationEventID=20487
It says the Registrations will close on September 11th. It also says that after this date you may purchase a BYOC badge directly at the show (if there is room left)

That's why I'm hoping to get a definite answer. If you just go to the link in the news post (www.igamesexpo.com) and go to registration it tells you for a BYOC badge you "must be registered by September 5th." The only thing would be if the Square event is a special circumstance.

Ok

Ok and why are we doing this?? Is there a prize involed, or is it just another chance to hang out with area FFXI players??

Perhaps they will give out free goldfish scoops for the top players who win? Or a free copy of a CD with the Summerfest clangy bell music?
