EQ Upgrades to DirectX 9

Here's the press release: ---------------- Sony Online Entertainment has exciting news for all EverQuest players. As the world of Norrath evolves and expands, so too does the technology powering EverQuest. Sony Online Entertainment is making significant upgrades to the EverQuest engine which will allow SOE to provide players with the great game, but on a much more stable and efficient platform. SOE anticipates patching in the new engine sometime during the next month or two. Part of this change will result in the need for all EverQuest players to upgrade to DirectX 9 (DX9), the latest version of Microsoft's 3D software. As best as SOE can determine, a very small percentage of our current EverQuest player base (less than 1%) may find that their older video cards are not compliant with DX9. To find out if a video card is DX9 compliant, players should check with the manufacturer of their card (video drivers may need to be updated as well). Players can also consult the EverQuest tech page on Sony Online Entertainment's website, located at http://eqlive.station.sony.com/support/tech_support.jsp. Sony Online Entertainment is very concerned that even a small number of our players may have issues running EverQuest. To address this, SOE has worked out a deal with NVIDIA and eVGA.com to provide current EQ players access to discounts on a number of newer video cards that are DX9 compliant. eVGA.com will be offering EQ players discounts on several PC video cards that utilize Nvidia technology, from the affordable GeForce FX 5600XT all the way up to the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra. Current EverQuest players can go to http://www.evga.com/eq/ to take advantage of this special offer.

So if my computer sucks (which it does) i have to go upgrade some video card to play EQ? what if i dont i cant play any more? haha sony loses money.

What is worng with EQ the way it is now? when Sony started nerfing ppl and changing this and that is when EQ started to get more lame and boring.

Better Graphics = more lag

Eh i havnt downloaded this yet cause i realy dont want to know if i need to quit eq now lol but if i do i do oh well.

But it sucks that soe does stuff like this... not everybody can jsut go out and buy some 100$ or whatever new computer peice

RE: lame

You know you people may not be a screwed as you think because better graphic's might not mean more lag, if I remember correctly when I first read about this a few months back, the hole point of the new engine was actually to reduce lag. You may log onto EQ after all is said done and be pleasantly surprised.
DX9 and EQ

Quit whinning people. DX9 is going to be used for ALL games in the NEAR future. If you can't run DX9 with your current video card... GO BUY a new one. A GeForceFX 5200 128M card is like what $80. Jeesh. Save your money for the next 2 months and buy a new card.
Stop your whining, and upgrade...

Mobile Radeon
# Feb 10 2004 at 3:23 PM Rating: Decent
I play EQ on a notebook with a mobile radeon 7500 processor. There is no DirectX 9 for this one. Also not a chance to upgrade a graphics card in a notebook. :(

What's Sony gonna do about this? Will I not be able to play EQ anymore? Or do I have to invest about 2000 Euro for a new notebook?

Now i'm really going berserk!!

Ok for all you people in Europe - PC Wold had the ge-Force ultra graphics card at an atronomical price of 200 pounds sterling. Come on SOE don't we pay enough already just to play?
RE: Graphics upgrade
# Feb 10 2004 at 2:08 PM Rating: Decent
Who says people need to buy the high-end geForce Ultra? There are plenty of value-priced video cards out there.

Frankly I'd be surprised if there's that many people who have video cards that can't work with DX9 (as opposed to take advantage of DX9's features) playing EQ. Most cards that old probably can't run EQ acceptably as is, so it's probably time for an upgrade anyway.

Its good new for all EQ players who live within the USA but what about the rest of us who live outside of the USA - personally I live in Europe and so do many other EQ players where is our discount to upgrade our graphics cards?

Or are we unimportant to Eq?

Thanks for this info. The dxdiag program was very easy to read! I thought I needed to upgrade and would have done so if I hadn't seen this post and used the little dxdiag applet!
What I'd like to see...
# Feb 09 2004 at 9:03 AM Rating: Decent
...and I know this doesn't have all that much to do with DX9, but it does with graphics. I'd love to see some upgrades of the graphical skins of old weapons.

The upgrade to the spell effects was nice, and I can't imagine updating/adding to the weapon graphics would be a huge investment of developer time. Just seems a shame that good weapons like the Shadowed Soul mace and Arbitors greatsword are burdened with lame graphics.

Again, not a necessity; just would be nice is all.
So What?

So they are upgrading the engine to a DX 9.0b engine. That shouldn't matter to most of you out there. The only requirement is that your video card needs to be DX 9.0 compatable. This doesn't mean you need to go buy a $200 video card. In most cases you should be fine if you update your video card drivers to the most recent driver. This driver needs to be DX 9 complatable, even if the card is not. So basically, my Radeon 9000, which is only DX 8.1 compliant, will run just fine because I have the newest drivers which work with DX 9.0. Granted, image quality won't be in DX 9.0 format (it's only a 8.0 card), but it'll work just the same.
Sure you dont already have it installed?
# Feb 08 2004 at 12:18 PM Rating: Decent
This also caused me to stir, but its been awhile since I've been into my system since it runs well atm. I already had DirectX 9 installed... before you complain about anything, follow the instructions to check your directx version. I remembering installing it in one of the engine upgrades in the past, because i thought i had to.

This is getting ridiculous, already had to purchace 1 new puter cause of this game. Not all of us can go out and buy the latest and the best. The video card is built into the mother board on mine and cant be upgraded. Gee, thanks Sony, years of work and hard earned money for a little relaxation shot because not all of us have expendable cash. This will probably cost me my account.

My card is also built in, but you do not need to change the chip. All you are doing is upgrading the drivers for it. Its a software change and not a hardware change. If you bought your computer within the last couple years and the card is built in it is more than likely compatible with DX9. Who knows, maybe it has already been automatically upgraded to DX9 if you have Win Xp.

hey man dont worry bout it being built in you can add an extra vid card to your comp mine was the same way the card was built into mother but i just bought a new card and installed it just like i would a sound card or a modem card

Any Nvidia or ATI card on the market today will work fine, even the cheapies. Second, you don't even know if your on-board vid card will work or not, it very well may.

Most people already HAVE DirectX 9 as it's been out for a year or so and you just need to download it from Windows Updates. EQ is just finally catching up to more modern standards that most people have already had.

Wait and see, chances are you system will be fine, it's very few systems that will need to upgrade video cards. If you do happen to need a new Video card, just pop it in the AGP slot, plug your monitor cable into it, restart the computer and install the drivers. Probably need to restart again and you'll be good to go, you shouldn't even have to disable the on-board video.

First thing, just about all the time anyways, that a gamer does with a comp that has built in vid on motherboard, is adds a better video card to the board(and disables the onboard/builtin card).. I'm not aware of any mb's that cant be upgraded. Learn more about your computer would be best for you here.

Well, lets face it all you need is a GeForce1 or newer. Should be able to get those used for next to nothing if you really need to. Even a new card that is decent can be had for $50, if your current card is more than 3 years old.

For those of us who already have DX9, will we see a visual performance increase as well as stability once this goes live? Or have the graphics pretty much capped out until they re-do the old world textures that are still left over?

Direct X 9 support WILL improve frame-rates and over-all performance, but you may not see an improvement in the graphics other than that as those are code based. Any improvements in that area will most likely be slight if at all. It DOES allow more advanced graphic options but those will have to be added over time. Those more advanced graphics will probably come at the cost of reduced frame-rates and over-all performance though. LOL (but I'm sure much like todays graphic options, you will be able to limit and turn off a lot of the bells and whistles just as you can now).
