SOE Developers Discuss EQ's Future

Sony invited a number of websites to San Diego to meet with the Everquest development team and deluge them with as many questions as we could think of about the game. You will likely see reports pop up on several other sites on this, so hopefully we won’t completely duplicate each other. Much of the conversation revolved around where the game was heading and how much Sony was willing to continue to devote to its continuing development. Because most of the development team was there in front of us for several hours, I felt we were really able to get a true sense of what they were thinking in terms of the game’s recent past and its future. Note that although I am writing questions and giving answers below, these are my summaries of what was said and are not actual quotes. How successful was The Legacy of Ykesha, and does this success mean the end of free zones and other additions? Apparently, Ykesha has been the most successful expansion Everquest has ever put out. They expect sales to be almost one to one players to sales, which basically means that almost everyone who plays Everquest has or will buy Ykesha. The day Ykesha was launched, Everquest set a record of 118,000 simultaneous users, and they have gotten almost all positive feedback on the new froglok race. A number of us were concerned that the success of Ykesha, which was not a true full sized expansion like Planes of Power, would mean that there would no longer be any free additions to the game. We were assured that free additions would continue both through revamps of existing, underutilized zones and additions of zones that are on the map but not yet available. The team then went on to name the Plane of Hate as a zone that was being revamped right now and Nurga and the Plane of Mischief as ones with planned future revamps. They further said that they are currently working on adding the underwater zone Veksar to the game, which would be a level 50 to 65 zone and would be available via a free download. Despite its success, the plan seems to be to alternate these download “extensions” with larger scale expansions that need to be purchased in a store. That is both practical and good marketing. Additions that require a lot of artwork are too large for download and must be on a disk, which means expansions like planes of Power that add a lot of new zones really can’t be sold via download. Plus, putting out a box and selling it through stores keeps Everquest’s name on the shelves and in front of the people browsing in the game store for something new to play, which is good marketing. With Star Wars Galaxies and EQ2 coming out, what will happen with Everquest? This may come as a surprise to many of you, but the development team does not think that either SWG or EQ2 will have a significant impact on Everquest. In fact they expressed a belief that if anything, those games will likely drive more sales of Everquest. They had a good argument. Despite doom and gloom predictions by many of the players, every new MMORPG that has come out since Everquest, including Asheron’s Call 1 and 2 and Dark Age of Camelot, has in fact increased the sales of Everquest rather than taken away from it. The publicity surrounding those games brings new attention to the whole genre and helps drive the sales of all of the games and expand the whole MMORPG player base. Certainly Star Wars will bring in a new set of players, many of whom may eventually switch over to Everquest. The team was adamant that Everquest will continue to thrive and expand for years to come and that Everquest 2 and SWG were not expected to pull away current Everquest players, but instead were expected to generate their own audience and also bring back many of the players who had played EQ in the past and gotten tired of it. The general consensus was that most Everquest players had too much time and effort invested in their characters to simply drop them and move on to a new game. As long as they are enjoying the game they are playing, why would they drop it and go play something else? Basically, the gist of their response was that as long as the players stick with Everquest, they will stick with the players. Surprisingly, Everquest is still growing. I was told that the sale of new Everquest accounts is actually higher today than it was a year ago, and it seems like every month or so they set a new record for simultaneous users. Despite the other projects they are working on or have released, it is clear that Everquest is their core product, and they know enough to make sure it keeps expanding and developing so that their players stay happy and keep playing. Certainly, there were quite a few people in the room whose only job was to work on expanding, tweaking and adding onto Everquest. This definitely did not have the look of a game that was being phased out or abandoned. What are some of the things we can expect to see in the future with Everquest? The whole team was really excited about the success of the invasion of Grobb and about the player’s reaction to that invasion. Apparently, this was done using a new quest technology that they quietly introduced with the Planes of Power expansion that lets them set up elaborate computerized events involving multiple zones. They actually characterized this first test of that technology as conservative, saying that the system was capable of quite a bit more than it showed in that event. This quest technology lets them run a single event across every server at the same time. It also lets the event cover multiple zones, and lets the mobs of the event go from zone to zone, even following the players across the zone lines if necessary. This can let more players participate in an event without straining the zone limits and causing undue lag. Moreover, where before an event of this magnitude needed massive GM involvement, they can now plan out the event beforehand and then let the computer handle most of the details. Therefore, you can expect to see more of this in the future. The plan is to try to make the world a little more dynamic, and to start to develop an ongoing storyline that the players can participate in. As they pointed out, if they are willing to stage an invasion of one of the game’s starting cities, then there is nothing you can say they won’t do. Other future plans really revolve around continuing to do what they have been doing over the past year or two. Older zones will get tweaked. New zones will get added. Class balancing will continue. Because of the new dye system, more armor looks are planned. Currently broken or imbalanced areas, such as archery, will be revamped. As you can guess, much of this was left vague, as they did not want to make promises that they would not be able to keep. I hope this has answered many of the questions you have had about the game and where it is heading. I know I truly got the sense that Sony was as dedicated to the continued success of Everquest now as it has ever been.

there will never be a MPRPG that will be for casual players. all those ex-EC hores and Bazaar junkies will always be there to rape a good game like EQ. you know the ones that are too concerned about making PP by the thousands, getting lvl 65 asap and making sure they can twink their other chars atleast 10 lvls a day.they will follow good RPGs anywhere. kids just dont know the essence of roleplaying anymore.

People just dont know what they want

Alot of people love this game, yet alot of people constantly whine about it. I have played for alittle over a year now, and have seen and experienced the good and the bad of this game. I've had hell levels, trouble finding friends, seemingly impossible tasks ahead of me. Some people get lucky, or get things handed to them. Some people care too much about Ego (I), and less about finding a way to enjoy themselves in the game. If you feel like its just kill med kill.. than you should try putting some zazz into your gameplay. Challenge yourself, dont worry so much about dying, corpse runs, XP loss. what does it matter if you are getting better gear and levels if you still don't enjoy what you are doing with them? Trust me theres alot of easy ways to have fun in this game, alone, or even with people.

Caster mobs are great, unexpected stuff is great.. If EQ lives up to this idea of implementing more events and activities in the game than get ready for some MASSIVE fun. Who knows it might even pay off with a couple items or cheesy easy XP. I wont hold my breath, it takes alot of programming and artistic time to truly implement good events that seem random, occur often, and satisfy the EQ world to feeling alittle more "dynamic"

Heres one --> Why dont the Griffin/fons/fawns occasionally migrate to misty thicket.. they gotta eat and im sure the beatle supply runs thin in the karanas. I wouldnt mind having the bajeezers scared out of me by a giant flock of evil birds viciously hunting out beatles in various zones.

And those little marley grimlings sure could go for a bath.. Shadow haven isnt such a haven when you got a buncha dirty mud diggers bathing in the local pools. Sure give those gaurds something to handle.

Well at this point im just rambling so ill make my point clear in one line --> If yer not happy maybe you are alone. If you aren't alone and still unhappy than you just need to be challenged in different ways that don't consume your time so much.

I have only been playing EQ for 6 weeks. I was looking for a good RPG that had the great storyline that several others had (Ultima, Daggerfall, etc) yet bring new challenges. I came over from Diablo II so I had my fears of what I would find in EQ with just a bunch of characters running around killing everything in sight. Here is what I see from my first few weeks: Overall I think it's a very fun game and very addicting. I solo about 90% of the time and will chat while soloing. I haven't joined aguild because I want to gather more info on what types of guilds exist and pick one that fits my style of play. I enjoy building my tradeskills but I must say that I am disappointed that even though I am a master (100+) in 5 different categories the items that are in my range are not money makers because there are so many uber items in the game. I think its a shame when you go to the trouble of building your trade and then discover that the cloak you made can't even bring back what you invested in materials. I wasn't around when PoP was introduced but I know that LoY has not really been a positive at least for me. All the zones I fight in were flooded with giulds PLing the frogs and they were incredibly rude to all the players who belonged in the zone. They were threatening palyers that if they interfered with the PLing that there would be consequences. I simply moved to other zones but when the higher lvl players think they can just bully everyone so they can PL their guildies alts then there is a problem. The great part of the game is that it brings different things to all of us. There are always going to be things we don't like but others will. Personally I dont think it is a game if you pL to the top in a week. Historically RPG's were meant to be painstaking processes that were filled with quests that took a long time but your accomplishments were very satisfactory. What satisfaction is there in fighting a level 35 monster at level 10 as a level 65 casts every buff known to man on you? If that is the goal of many of the palyers then why not just give them the option of starting at level 50? To me the enjoyment of the game is earning what I get and knowing that I have earned my levels and my gear. I guess SOE's problem is do the ysuit the game for powergamers or do they suit it for classic RPG'ers. IT's kind of hard to please both at the same time.

Soloing at the lower levels is nice, but you will very quickly learn that the higher levels are not made for soloing. SOE in its infinite wisdom, took that option away from you and forces you to group. GL on finding a group too. If you don't group, you may not get any experience when you can't even take down light blues on your own.

EQ2 is the game you really want and you won't have to worry about the hardcore EQPC players you mention as they will not like EQ2. You can get a taste of how it will play from EQOA. I think you would enjoy EQOA better than EQPC. I know I do.

I must admit I was "agraid" of grouping early on. Too many **** hole experiences. Now I like it. I still solo 75%+ and it is slower but thats why I like it. Just yesterday I decided to follow someone to Velious for the first time. We got a group and I had a hell of a time :). Yes you will encounter ***** and the pompus. But realize most people feel like you and hate em as well :). As fot the nice ppl. I gave a newb 20 Nec all my good lvl 20-25 gear cause he was hurting for some. I was broke and wanting a certain item. 10 mins after I gave the goods happily. I was sent a tell "how much more ya need for your item ya wanted to buy?" I ended up with this nice guy giving me full price to get my item (Teken on Torvo) then the person selling it sending a tell dropping the price on it :). Being nice pays off. I was invited to a cool guild cause of niceness. I sent an ooc "Anyone need this spell [forget the name]. Enc only and not for resale" Two mins later Im in an awesome guild with buncha friendly ppl my range. My highest is 33 yesterday and Ive been playing for 1 and 1/2 years. Most important of all I am having one hell of a fun time.

the only thing i dont like about all these expansions is the ease at which sony makes it to level and the emphasis on high level playing, i remember when i was so excited to get level 35, it was a very long grueling workout to get that high and wow, no more spell book to stare at!...i died at lvl 1 i still had to go find my body and run thru a dangerous zone naked to find my body...took me to level 20 something to save and have 1000pp in the bank, and oh yeah penalty levels following hell levels every 5 levels you progressed past 30..gasp!...nowadays i can get to level 50 in a week if i so desire and unless your uber or a desired class your not going anywhere past 60(i saw a lvl 65 frog 6 days after loy came out..sigh)...my new beastlord is now 55 and i plan on soloin in jagged pine to 58ish then i am in a dilemma wondering where in norrath can one solo? not saying that it cant be done, but it will be tough with lots of downtime...from what i have seen beastlords are not wanted in pop groups unless no tank types are available....hmmm
anyways not really complaining just stating some facts about the way the game has gone with the expansions...cause i love EQ and will continue to play for a long time to come!

Yep, that is exactly what this current ad campaign from SOE is, FODDER! Before I discuss anything I'm going to give you a link to a post on gamespy that talks about MMOGs. That link is:

Ten Reasons You Don't Want to Run a Massively Multiplayer Online Game

My favorite part is in the commentary at the very end which refers to EQPC and Ultima, "[These games were] originally developed to charge people hourly fees and hence were meant to be as addictive and time-consuming as possible."

EQPC is everything that everyone has said in this thread and more. If you aren't happy with the game, then just leave. I did and I have never been happier. Entertainment should never feel like a 2nd or 3rd job. If playing any game does feel like work, then its not entertainment, plain and simple. I had at least 4 characters that I played regularly, the highest being a 63 mage, but I never really liked the game at all. Why did I play? Because there was nothing better to do, so why not.

What finally broke me from the game were two things. The fact that there truly is no end to how powerful you can make your character and the fact that as your character gets more powerful, so do the mobs. It never ends. All of this creates an endless loop, add a slow pace and what do you have? A game that is extremely addictive.

As for claims about the membership increasing, well they did fail to leave out a few not so minor points. As one person has stated, the latest Harry Potter film and the 2nd episode of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy was released during the same time. Also, more and more people are being laid off and have nothing to do with their time. The next time you play the game, find out how many of the people that you are playing with are not employed. If they say they are students, ask them what their grades are. You may very well be surprised.

If you believe SOE and its claims, which haven't changed at all over the years, then more power to you and hope SOE actually keeps its promise. If you don't believe in campaign promises, well there are alternatives. I was a part of the EQOA beta team and was very impressed with the game that was being created. It is an entirely different game. If you are happy with EQPC, then I seriously doubt that you would like EQOA. If you aren't happy with EQPC, then visit this link and checkout the comments as well:

Review of Everquest Online Adventures

There are other games out there as well. Games where the people behind the game are more concerned with all of the people who play it, rather than the egos of the development team. Yes Alan Crosby, that last line was meant for you. The bottom line is, have fun. It’s your life, enjoy it. If going to the movies a few times a month brings you more joy than playing an online game, DO IT and DROP the game!

Have fun…

Actually that small bug you speak of occurs only when you zone with less hp's than the amount you gain directly from itesm, not including STA item based gains.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 08 2003 at 10:47 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) U ****** the buff wiping has been rounnd sicnce i think kunark.its not a glitch. If you zone with less then i think 70% of your natural HP's thenit wipes all effects and buffs and puts u in a safe point of the zone.so say u have 1000 hps and you get poisoned deasesed and dotted etc so u zone with 300 hps then it wipes the effects and buffs to SAVE you!

Actually dude, you are wrong as well.

1. It is a bug.
2. I has been a problem since the game was created.
3. It only happens if you zone with fewer hps than the amount of +hp you have from the equipment you are wearing. If you have +500 hps from the items you are wearing and zone with 499 hps, you will lose all of your buffs (including DoTs).
4. SOE has known about the problem since about 2 months after the game was originally released.
5. SOE has said that they will not be correcting the problem as it would require a rewrite of the core components of the game.

Enjoy...

all of this sounds really good to me, the new things they are doing, and frankly im proud of sony for their work, they are really starting to pick up and work hard on the game, i thought before, right after the release of pop that this game was going down... in terms of quality, but now that i have read the many articles about this interview day, i see that the development team is really trying to make the game better. and OMG im freaking out! they are finaly implementing Veksar! THAT IS SOO SWEET! WOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!! lol sorry had an outburst. the archery revamp i believe is a good idea altho alot of rangers will complain, look it needs to be done to balance, being able to do insane damage from a distance with no hate is essentialy exploiting that. overall good job Sony, you're doing good now ) and Allakhazam, thanks for doing this article :)

Wow, ok, first of all, I work overnights, and so I am very tired, lol. So this might not make much sense. Lots of good opinions here. I love freedom of speech! I love opinions! Ok, so on with mine. I have a level 54 (almost 55) Druid on the E'ci server. I also have a level 35 Cleric and level 26 Beastlord. I have my epic (finally! Woot!). I have been playing for almost 2 years. hehe Yes, 2 years, that's what I said. Why am I not higher level? Well, I'll tell you why! Cause I take FOREVER to do anything. When I get on, I do a /who all Guild. I say hello. I ask how everyone is doing. Then I do a /who all friend and say hello. lol. THEN I decide where I want to go to level. I try to get a group with said Guild, and said Friends, and if I wait for 15 mins, and nothing, then I go solo. There are plenty of places for me to solo. Jaggedpine (good exp). Umbral Plains (Elysians are great exp, and they have a chance at dropping some awesome loot!) I recently learned I can solo in Maiden's Eye. And add to that list The Grey. Now that LoY is out, I can solo in the Gulf of Gunthak. Or, I can find groups. hehe It takes me a little while sometimes (mostly cause I am chatting), but Plane of Justice is great exp! And the mobs (in the prisons) are cake. Plane of Disease is also great exp, and me and a bard can solo/partner in there. lol I just have to stay invis while he kites, and refresh buffs as necessary. Really, he doesn't need me, but he is a friend, and guildmate, and he likes the company, lol. If I don't go with a friend or guildmate, I can't get in plane groups, lol. They just don't NEED a level 54 Druid. hehe. As for EQ getting worse, I disagree. The graphics have gotten WAY better. (Notice how funny all the characters look with all the new models turned off. hehe) The features have improved, as have the quests, classes, races, etc. I love the Beastlords, they are Ubah! My hubby (55 Ranger) just started playing his Beastlord (level 30) the middle of January. Guess what level he is today? lol 54! You know why? Cause he can solo very well, their pets are UBAH! And because he doesn't get on the game an socialize. (I am guild leader, btw, so I cannot just 'play' all the time.) Tradeskills have improved, IMO. I can make dyes! That makes some good money, and you don't have to charge an arm and a leg. You want loot? Go to old world zones. heh You can kill mobs there easy, and they drop pretty good loot. Like Kael (I can solo the entrance there too, with KEI and a little patience.) And I am not a twink, I am not Ubah! I have worked very hard at all I do. I do not have a lot of time to play, so I usually solo, but that's ok. I never was one to request money for ports (I still don't) so I don't miss that money. Want to know what I have? I just got my epic last month after alot of hard work. And the help of many friends, thank you very much! And yes, I get frustrated sometimes, but I will tell you, when I do, I log out of the game. I can get frustrated by RL, I don't need a game to do that! A game is supposed to be fun, that's why it's called a ...

G ood
A ttitude
M eans
E verything

Anyway, I guess that's all I got, lol. Sorry if I didn't make any sense, and sorry this was so long. I don't pretend to know everything, and I do get frustrated sometimes. But hey, I can stop paying anytime I want! No really, I can! Seriously! I mean it! ;) Just have fun, the rest will happen with time. Whether you are a casual player, or hard core. And remember, don't be frustrated by people who get level 65 in 2 weeks, or people who have 100k sitting in the bank, and they are twinked out to the hilt. Imagine how boring the game must be for them. No wonder they are making new chars to twink and level. heh I would rather be level 54 forever than be BORED. (They are just go getters! There is nothing wrong with being a turtle. Remember, Slow and Steady wins the race!) We could ALL do good to remember that! ;)

I would just like to add that I believe with the movies releases of The Lord of The Rings I and II certainally MUST have had a huge impact on sales of Everquest and other MMORPG's.

Just as when another Star Wars episode will be released so will the increase in sales for SWG -- I'm certain.

You know, I would LOVE to see SOE get some backers from the movie industry and launch a movie project based on Everquest --- hell, name the movie "Everquest" then you will see sales shoot through the roof. My imagination runs wild with what potential this concept could have. Just think, if George Lucus is giving his blessing to SWG (which I'm sure he is very involved) can you imagine what a movie would look like with him involved? Get him and Steven Speilberg together and OH MY GOD!

With the new expansion packs came quests, storylines, events, etc. They also set up many things that force people to be in groups such as the trials to be able to enter other zones. Before this, a wizzy and druid could go anywhere in EQ. Now they have to be flagged to hit new zones...

So I would love to see the naysayers pass the trials by themselves...

They are forcing / encouraging more player interaction all the time. A good example is the LFG function that allows easier groupage with peeps.

But... ANY game can be labeled as a "leveling treadmill". If that is what they want to do then fine. A good example is when someone goes to the store to buy a game and then downloads the cheat codes. Then just uses the "invulnerable" or "godly" cheat and finishes the game in one weekend...

It is just how each of you views it... I view it as a challenge to gain friends, complete quests, overcome obstacles, talk with friends about something OTHER THAN WORK, and of course to achieve goals. If you want to twink, then twink... Just don't sit there farming something for a twink when another wants the camp for a quest item or exp.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 06 2003 at 8:46 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) EQ is just a leveling treadmill, the only thing most people on EQ do is gain higher levels and get more ph4t l3wt. Few people even roleplay they do /rp just to make themselves anon and flaunt their guild name about. SWG has a balanced PvP system unlike UO and it has a skill based system instead of a leveling system, so in EQ if you became a lvl 63 paladin and in the end find that its useless you might just delete it and start over or pass all your gear to a twink , you cant restart to become a lvl 63 cleric or druid or shaman

i dont think anything, "WILL KILL EQ". since i have begun this game 2 years ago it has done nothing but improved.i have enjoyed it every second.i have met the most interesting ppl and made some outstanding friends.i only hope that everquest continues for years to come.i hear all the time or read actually ppl complaining about how ppl dont have lives because they have 1 or 2 lvl 60+ toons. well little fact of life ppl do what they enjoy wheather it be play in a realm where life is not so real or enjoy the fact that while you play you can talk to ppl from all walks of life and the minor stuff in life doesnt matter, the only thing that matters here is your true personalality.i kind of like the fact that there is no real judegment here.maybe you should go to "swg" or better yet go play with your barbies.
For better or worse

I love this. Sony shows commitment to making a great game and continuing to make it a great game and most people just complain. I really love the people who say they HATE this game. Yet I distinctly get the impression they are still paying money to play it. Can't be that bad if they still put time, effort, and cash into everquest.

I myself get frustrated and see how unfair the game can be in terms of zones and XP. My main is lvl 29! No one ever said you didn't have to work for what you get in this game.

Anyways... as a student programmer I understand bugs in programs and I can hardly comprehend the immense amount of work that has to go into this game on a daily basis. I think us in Everquest world have it pretty good.

I wish Sony would introduce more chain quests. starting in the cities and ending in the new zones or underutilized zones. (chain quest are quests the same as epic quests. you do progrssivly harder quests to achieve a final uber item). Monk Shackle Quest and the Coldain Shawl Quest are examples.
I would love to see an uber item be a final quest involving say, the Plane of Mischief, a truely underutilized zone.
Also, I think sony should ditch having (for new chain quests) rare mobs (uncommon is ok) and go for more the raid effect, where you need lots of help, instead of patience, hoping your mob will even spawn when you have time to play EQ.
For better or worse

Wow,,,to those that think SoE has left zone gliches 'untouched' or deemed them unimportant with new additions to the game that they charge for,...here's a perspective from someone who writes code: THERE will ALWAYS be problems! Get used to it..and StarWars, EQ2, and ANY other forum of this genre WILL TOO. So, lighten up and be happy that we all have a game that at it's worst, is still one hell of a good time.!!

Why I play Everquest
# Mar 05 2003 at 4:30 PM Rating: Good
Let me introduce myself. I'm a lvl 65 Ogre Shaman on the povar server. I've played everquest for 3 years approximately now and regardless of how many things in the game I hate, I have to admit I've never loved a game more than Everquest.
I seldomly respond to stuff like this on messageboards or webpages but today I felt the need to.
I love everquest because of : My friends, my accomplishments, my guild and every piece of history on my server I've been a part of (including the ones that infuriated me at the time). I've spent a lot of time on my character and i'm proud of every piece of gear, flag, victory, etc that me and my friends have accomplished.
I hate when people ***** on boards about how their class, lvl, etc is getting screwed/nerfed/etc. Who cares? You always have the option of lvling up or changing classes. Everquest, like practically anything else in life is what you make of it, and you get what you put into it.

Cliches rock.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 05 2003 at 4:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Well the good news I guess is all the Stuff we have been complaining about that Verant says it will fix eventually, actually will get fixed. The bad part of it is now instead of Bug fixes being free, we will have to pay for an "internet" upgrade...Sigh
