Okay, I'm sick of cable (that's a topic all of its own) so I decided to figure out what my options are. I purchased a single episode of something on Amazon instant video. After installing "unbox" - the amazon video player/downloader - I downloaded my video. The videos will show up in Media Center which is great for my HTPC setup, getting me one step closer to ditching cable. Here's my Problem:

The video (wmv) will play in unbox, will play in media player, but will not play in media center UNLESS (and here is something that is going to destroy your brain and make you hate Microsoft's awful OS if you don't already) I start the video elsewhere and then play it in MCE. Yes, that's right. If I launch the video in Unbox or in Media Center I can then launch it just fine in MCE. I can close those other programs and it will still run fine. I simply can't start it in MCE unless it's already playing somewhere, I get "Windows cannot play the video."

...WTF. Seriously?

What kind of sound card do you have? Specifically, do you have a soundblaster Audigy II or similar creative labs sound card? There is a driver issue that an updated driver addresses that can cause that issue. Are you seeing any error messages, specifically something aling the lines of "Media usage Rights Acquisition" by any chance? That could indicate the media center security and DRM thingy has nuked itself (which it will do at the drop of a hat, but especially if this is a hard drive move from one motherboard to a new one at any point). You can regenerate that, but it is a pain in the *** to do so. Anything in the error logs under control panel: administrative tools: event logs?

I figured it out and as usual feel dumb. Not sure why this worked because once downloaded the episodes are just .wmv files but after uninstalling Unbox and reinstalling it I can now launch the vids through mce.
