Does anyone know if there is a point when we will have to find spells instead of automatically getting them?

I believe you will receive all of your spells through leveling. However, there are different levels of spells that you can buy / find / quest for.

Go to this thread. It gives a good explanation of the system.

I haven't played a mage, but I believe you will always know of the spells you can cast, but you may have to quest to make those spells more powerful, just like abilities.

I am not completely certain, but I think you always get the basic version of each spell automatically, right up to level 50. However within a few levels most spells are seriously underpowered, and I don't think there are really "new versions" per-se (Like level 4 firebolt, level 13 Fireball, level 19 Uber-Firebolt). Instead you have to find, craft, quest for, or buy Apprentice, Journeyman, or Master versions of the spell.

So you will only have 1 "firebolt" your entire career, you just upgrade it repeatedly. Also it will always do the same thing, so if the one you got at level 2 does direct damage only then that is all it will ever do, and that will be your only Fire based DD you ever get. However at level 7 you might get a "Bonds of Fire" spell which does slightly less damage than a firebolt but also slows the target a little. It will need to be upgraded as well then, but you will never get another Fire based DD+Slow again, or if you do it will be a more powerful version that you get ONLY because you chose a class at level 10 or a sub-class at 20 that specifically gets more powerful versions of that kind of spell.

You will always automatically receive the App.1 version of each new spell or ability. The only exception is the "fun" spells which are purely cosmetic effects (flashy visuals, forcing group-mates to perform emotes, etc.)

I just bought the App.II spells bt haven't had a chance to test them before the server went down.

Is it still possible to use the App.I version in order to conserve power?

App.2 will be more power-efficient than App.1. When you upgrade, you normally get more damage (or buff, or whatever) for the same amount or sometimes even less power.

No it isn't. Once you scribe your App. II spell it overwrites your App. I spell.

You don't automatically receive ALL your spells. There are some spells starting at level 20 that are more of an entertainment type, such as Illusions and such which must be purchased. Other than that, you should always receive a basic version of your normal/needed spells.

Here is a tip, don't bother buying anymore App. II spells... Just buy App III. from players.. Merchants can't sell anything higher then App II and players who are skilled enough in their Artisan career can make them.

EvilJohn, a developer posted a note in the beta forums saying that Ap I & II were identical, one free, one storebought...

How can they be identical? What's the point of buying one then? You mean to tell me that the only thing that I get from II is the ability to get to III? Can I skip II and just Quest III?

Ok, here is the break down of what I learned about spells(I prefer to call them abilities) in beta.

As long as you have the required skill to learn the ability, you can upgrade to that level of book, scroll, whatever. From what I've seen, the skill requirement for any mastery level of one ability is always the same, ie if you have app1/2 you can go out and buy an adept3 version and scribe it. If you examine the book it will tell you what the required skill and skill(level) range is for that book.

This works just like equipment. You gain 5 points in your class skill every level (they may have changed this to simply a cap increase.. dunno yet, haven't had the chance to play yet). You'll eventually find that the power of your ability has capped for the most part, and if you look at the description for it you should see that your class skill is considerably above the high end on that ability--much like the way armor or a weapon go green/grey.

Around the time that your ability is pretty grey, you will receive a new ability that is on the same timer as your old ability. For my warrior, the upgrade to Taunt was Anger. When I used Anger, both Anger and Taunt had to refresh. Wild Swing became Fierce Swing. Kick became Knee Break, or something like that. You get the idea.

My upgraded abilities at app1 were about equal to my old abilities at app3 or adept1. It may not be this way for all classes, but from what I've seen of books and such, that's the way it looks to me.

Hope this answers a few questions on abilities and upgrades.
