EverQuest: Progression Server Update

There is a new progression server in the works. Here's all the details!

More details have emerged about the new progression server in the works. EverQuest developer Ed "Aristo" Hardin compiled a list of frequently asked questions about the server and offered some details about upcoming in-game polls.

Here are some highlights from his EQ Forum post:

  • Zones that have had their graphics revamped will keep their present-day geometry.
  • Zones that have had their content revamped will be in their earlier versions (some in their original formats; some in later [but not current] formats).
  • Most features that were added with expansions will be locked until those expansions are unlocked (you won't see mercenaries running around at launch).
    • Several exceptions that will be available at launch: the raid window, maps, augmentations, AAs (still mostly level and expansion-restricted), saving of tradeskill recipes, audio triggers, many achievements, hotbar revamps, and guild rank customizations.
  • The user interface will keep its current form.
  • To handle heavy player population loads, newbie zones will be set up so that they trigger a separate version of the zone when the current zone gets too full of players.
    • In these cases, players will still be able to choose which version of the zone they enter.
  • There will be no instancing of raid content in static zones.
  • The server will have an open Beta period (no dates announced yet).
  • Experience will be reduced (a new experience system is to be tested through Beta).
  • You will be seeing more in-game polls about how players would like expansion unlockings to be handled.

And it is just like the last time they opened up a progression server. It filled to its MAX CAPACITY and no one else can now get into the server. Are there plans to open another server like RAGEFIRE or do the rest of us who want to use the new progression server need to wait until the others have reached their max level and are waiting for the vote to open the server further.

P99 is great until you get sick of doing 5 years of Velious with no chance of them releasing a new xpac. Its also a fun experiment to watch how one guild with 8 toons per member can use that to lock down every mob in game.

P99 is also very close to classic, including XP rates, mana regen, drop rates, the major changes are found in the UI.

What about all the newbie quests in the newbie areas,,, will they all work or not? Also Old Freeport was bad enough to get around in, the new one's even worse.

My recollection is:

They were in last round of progression servers.

They did adjust the weapons to scale as expacs were unlocked rather than being PoP newbie powered in original era.

Round 1 (Combine/Sleeper) server was merged at some point (after GoD I believe... foggy on that) and folded into one of the regulars eventually.

Round 2 (Fippy/Vulak) is still going despite being well past PoP. Population is down, but must be $ viable to keep them both going this long. I suspect Vulak will be merged away before the new progression round starts --though that is just my suspicion*


*I played on Vulak (the smaller server) which was very busy the first few months. The announcement of the vote to unlock Kunark caused a huge drop-off in the casual-slowly-enjoy-the-scenery crowd. Several focused raid guilds and casuals that didn't mind the content being pushed faster have kept it going though (or at least were the last time I logged in to look).

Since Round 3 is starting slower paced... I won't be surprised if it stays busy until PoP at which time it will have been up for almost 2 years (if I am doing the math right).

I agree about the new Freeport. It's nice-looking but they should have brought back the original, just for the nostalgia.

What's this mean, particularly the last part in ( ).

Opening new instances of the newbie zones if they get over-crowded is a clever idea. It does betray possibly some OVER-confidence, however, but I guess optimism is a good thing. How is noobie zone defined? Zones like Crushbone and Unrest can get potentially over-crowded on a progression server but they're not generally considered noobie.

Some zones have had their content (NPCs, items, quests, etc.) revamped multiple times over the years. Some of those zones will be in their original formats while others will be in later (but not current) formats.

These are the details from Aristo's post:

Firiona Vie - Original population.
Veeshan's Peak - Original population, but no death restrictions.
Plane of Mischief - Original population. The "easy" entrance will not be active until it changes to the current version.
Grimling Forest - Original population.

I just wish they would have removed the modern freeport. I absolutely despise it with a passion. Everything else looks pretty good.

Didn't see anything mentioned but I guess its safe to assume defiant will be removed at launch?

I have to agree with that. The newer Freeport has always felt like a thorn.

New XP system sounds interesting. FV and The Hole having their original populations makes me very happy.

That was the first thing that popped in my head too. I don't think i've ever heard anyone say they like they changes they made to Freeport. If it had been made old style i might have visited just too see the old school version.

I do like the new Freeport over all. Old freeport was the very first thing I saw in EQ. I hated it and was discouraging until I finally found my way into commonlands. The new FP is smart, good looking, bright, and is easy to navigate.

I won't say I like the changes to Freeport, but I don't mind it.

Oasis of Marr and Kerra Isle not separate zones (from former adjacent) anymore I don't like.

Muppets/longhair Kobolds I don't like.

Nektulos 2.0 (the fairy garden circle forest) I didn't like.

I too find it interesting as well. I wonder what the "new" experience system will be? hell levels?????
