Mario Kart 8: Upcoming DLC x2

6 characters, 8 vehicles, and 16 courses split between two packs for $12 total.

If you've got a Wii U, odds are you have Mario Kart 8. With over 3 million copies sold, roughly half of Wii U owners have hit the tracks. In an effort to follow up that success, Nintendo is doing what any smart company would do with a smash hit: release DLC!

Coming this November and next May, each Add-On Content pack has 4 vehicles and 8 courses. They also come with three characters each, listed below:

  • Pack #1 (Nov) Characters: Link, Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach
  • Pack #2 (May) Characters: Villager, Dry Bowser, and Isabelle

Nintendo has a few more specifics:

"Each Add-On Content pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses,...

"...includes classics like Wario's Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first AOC pack."

As a bonus for buying both packs, you get 8 Yoshi colors and 8 Shy Guy colors. If you pre-order, you unlock them immediately! The two-pack bundle is $12, but they're also available for $8 each. You can pre-order both Add-Ons starting today.

Our Take: 6 characters, 8 karts, and 16 tracks for $12? We've definitely seen less content at a higher pricepoint. The bonus Yoshi and Shy Guy colors are even a nice plus. For anyone still shaving time off their laps, this is a great way to keep a good game fresh.

Bonus: Today is also the release of free Mercedes-Benz DLC! It's a little odd, and no doubt involves money going into Nintendo's pockets, but hey: it's free, who cares!
