Saw Ready Player One last night (on Easter too, how fitting) and it was not as good as I may have dreamed by much better than I feared. Curiously, my wife loved it so maybe knowing the source material is a detriment since it felt to me like every third chapter was missing. They kept the basic framework, characters and premise but changed almost everything else: the quests were changed to make them more movie-friendly (who wants to watch someone play Zork?), the plot streamlined and some character roles changed. There's more "outside" stuff going on than in the book, probably so you weren't just watching one long cartoon.

I had fun. Most of the criticisms I've seen are valid but didn't bother me much and didn't bother Flea at all. I'd be interested to hear more impressions from people who hadn't read the book but don't know how large of a group that is: our theater was only 50% full and it wasn't an particularly large theater. Not great for its first weekend.

Edit: Not that my anecdote is necessarily data since RPO seems to have had a fairly successful opening.

Pretty much how I feel about every capeflick. I didn't see it, but my wifemate did with a group of her work friends and she said she enjoyed it, though between the two of us she's the gamer of the family.

April Fools weekend, so I don't believe anything "news" related from the last few days.

Rick and Morty's April Fools wasn't nearly as obnoxious this time. Instead of showing the same sneak peak episode of the next season (cause... it doesn't exist) over and over again for the whole week, they did some parody-thing. Bushworld Adventures Rick and Morty. Crudely animated, Australian accented. And I really found it funny. But I also laugh at stuff like Workaholics and Andy Samberg's HBO mockumentary movies.

Not sure how long they'll be Streaming it. And definitely NSFW.

"I did some science to my portal gun, and now it's also a real gun."

And I noticed the name of tonight's Legends episode is simply "Guest Staring John Noble" So far he's only been a voice in the show (at least, I think he's only been the voice). I wonder if he shows up this time. (Or maybe he already has, and I don't remember).

It really wrecked Toonami's scheduling on my dvr, but I did like that most of the night was subbed instead of dubbed. And not having Rick & Morty for eight hours was definitely a step in the right direction.

Legends was a bit slow, compared to some of the other episodes. All the build up for Obama and John Noble and they were barely in the episodes.

Legion: Seems I may not have been crazy. The Squid/Octopus imagery in Season 1. Cephalopod HR-14C... and I'm pretty sure that the opening scene, the light reflecting around the water is an upside down squid/octopus shape. I noticed it before I saw the Cephalopod HR-14C wanted posted. Once the camera emerges from the water, the light source is in the middle of the "head". The head is upside down, and there are arm shapes curling in on either side of the screen by the purple/pinkish halo that the light is making.

New weird thing in the background instead of the DWTYE from Season 1, is the guy in the leg-cart and crutches wearing some sort of animal head. He's in the room with the drugged out Melanie, then is working his way down the hallway when the kids are playing duck-duck-goose.

David, Bird, and Lenny's dance off in the memory club seemed to be a distraction so that Division 3 and Cary wouldn't figure out he was helping them find the body. I'm guessing the bald guy with the painted forehead is supposed to be Farouk.

The strange mustached robot-women and the guy with the basket on his head. Kerry popping out to see David get undressed was funny. Also her being the apparent head of the Division 3 Tactical group, in charge of the guys that almost beat her to death last season, was a nice turn of events.

The mutated tar-black baby chick delusion following David around in his "dream" world and his "real" world. Pretty sure that small line Sid was following to David was just what the delusion-chick left behind, inching it's way toward him.

Still leaning toward a lot if not all of this being in his head. Much like the weirdness around the Hospital and Summerland in Season 1, Division 3 Headquarters outside is very surreal. Honeycomb architecture matching David's compass gift to Sid. Large green blimps shaped like pointing hands tethered all over the surrounding area of the building.

I liked the Bollywood dance off more than this episode's ... until Cary started dancing. Man has got moves, kind of reminded me of that ... I want to say Chemical Brothers video; The one with Christopher Walkens. Good start, overload the audience with questions and mess with our minds. After the first season, I'm betting they're going to throw a ton of red herrings.

You mean this one? He's got similar moves.

I didn't like the song of choice at the beginning of the dance scene, but about the time Plaza got in on the dance action, I had warmed up to the music. I think that's also when the violin is added to the mix (or, some sort of string instrument). Bonus of Plaza in some sheer tights.

I hope Jemaine stays a focus. I like his voice, and I would like to hear him sing in this season.

That's the one. That whole dance sequence is great, though I'm not a huge fan of electronica.

Krypton: Why does a tech based space alien who is collecting worlds of significant evolution still weak to EMPs? You'd think at some point he'd have figured out that particular weakness and adjusted accordingly.

Rewatching Legion because, you know, you have to, and I'm at the dance sequence again and I just noticed that they're dancing in groups of five and it's making me laugh because in Ni No Kuni 2 you have these little creatures that run around in groups of five and now I'm going to play that game and expect them to start dancing.

I've got something like 12 hours in to Ni No Kuni 2. It's got so much stuff going on. I've only just started the Kingdom (it's a kingdom builder, with citizen recruitment and job allocations, plus RTS styled time alloted researching to improve it) and I have tried 3 different mini battles (Musou/Pikmin style battles to protect your Kingdom and improve your standing). And of course the main story (RPG, with Tales-Of styled action battles).

As soon as I unlocked the Kingdom I was afraid to leave it be and go off to do the story, cause I wanted to keep telling the people what to do and collecting the money and items...

Edit:
Season Finale of Magicians. Wasn't all that spectacular, but that choice of music playing during the ending scenes made it memorable. Now gotta wait til 2019 for another season. /sigh

I just got to the gambling town, so I'm going pretty slow as well. Pretty Ghibli so far; Looks bright and childish but the story is deceptively mature. I figure it'll last me until the Spider-Man game finally releases in Setember ... provided there isn't another delay.

Karl Urban, who seems to be the hardest working actor in cape movies, will be Billy Butcher in The Boys.

I will say that Thor: Ragnarok was probably the first Marvel film where I really noticed the difference between seeing it in 3D in the theater and not when at home. The lightning effects were amazing in 3D.

I have yet to see a movie in 3D at the theaters. I have prescription lenses (near sighted). I've not been willing to take the gamble on how it would work.

Edit:
So... Gotham: Totally-Not-Joker won't be Joker, but his twin brother played by the same actor will end up being him?

Same. My normal everyday depth perception is fine but put me in front of a 3D film and I'm like the dude from Mallrats trying to see the sailboat in the stereoscopic picture.

I only hit the big centerpiece Marvel flicks in the theater and catch up on the "build up" films at home.

Lost in Space series on Netflix, Friday the 13th.

Can't be worse than the recent movie, right?

I'm actually kind of neutral on that movie. I didn't hate it, but don't really think it was good. It's a "Is there nothing else on? Ok, I'll leave the TV tuned to FX while I do other stuff for the next couple hours."

Still hate Hotel cable and different time zones.

I see the 3D mostly because in my theaters they show an hour before the regular edition and that's worth the extra buck or two to me. Which is why they do it.

The new trailer for Star Wars Solo movie:

I continue to be completely underwhelmed. This may be the first Star Wars movie that I don't see in theaters (except for the original versions of the original trilogy, I was not born or too young for those).

Star Wars has never been my thing. I don't think I've even seen Force Awakens yet, certainly not Last Jedi, and I can't remember anything about the prequel trilogy except for the ridiculous pod racing scene. Only reason I even watched the original trilogy was because it was mandatory viewing to be a nerd until suddenly everyone was a nerd.

Legends of Tomorrow: Spent the whole episode expecting Voltron since they mentioned it like fifty times and then was completely overwhelmed by our lord and savior Beebo saving the day. I swear the absurdity of this show is too much sometimes. Nearly choked to death laughing.

If anyone is interested in that one character Jason Statham plays in every movie fighting a shark in a movie that probably should be a direct-to-SyFy production, here's the trailer to The Meg. Shut up, Meg.

The Flash: Haven't watched it all yet, but... Night of Cameos? Trejo, and Jay and Silent Bob? Not sure if I should expect more after work tonight.

Finished reading listening to Ready Player One on my road trip, and it was pretty good. Depending on what my parents want to do this weekend, I am going to try to get in and see the movie. My mom wants to watch Rampage though... so depending on what they want to do this weekend I may have to juggle those around.

Legion: Melanie portions of Legion seem to be dull. Shadow King didn't blow up the little kid guards. Basically just "Shoo"ing them off. And pretty sure Farouk is trying to hint to David that this reality is all his.

Lenny-King in the corner of the room that Cary got dragged into... was really creepy (before she stepped out of the corner and fully materialized). Strange how much Kerry seems to hate being outside of Cary. Also she appears to be aging rapidly now that she is the outside host.

I like the interactions between David and Division 3 guy. "Oh, you gonna put more office supplies in my face?

I bought my mom an Amazon Fire stick and spent a couple hours on Saturday setting it up, entering account info for various services and showing her how to navigate it. I'm pretty sure her favorite part is the landscape scene screen saver. "Ooohhh... a stream in Vermont!"

I finished reading listening to American Gods yesterday so now I'm ready to tackle to Starz series and bitch about how they ruined everything.

For RPO (Book spoilers): Name spelling butchering ahead, due to not reading, only listening. I was slightly disappointed that at the end, after the build up of all the Mechs being described and explained, it ended so quickly with everything so underutilized. The Sixxer fleet is destroyed right away. Understandable due to millions of people firing on them, but still. All that about the 5 lions and Voltron, and we don't even get a little bit of transformations. And Sorento's Mecha Godzilla is defeated quickly. Ultraman is a "press here to win" button, Vastly more powerful than even the penultimate reward for the ultimate quest. I enjoyed Parzival blasting Sorento with ease, but still wished the whole thing was just... more.

And now that I'm interested in seeing many of the scenes from the book play out on the movie screen, I'm doubting I will see things happen like they did. I can't imagine some of that stuff playing on on the big screen easily. But maybe I will be surprised, now that I understand some of the scenes from the trailers a bit more.

Edit:
Seems strange to me that a piece of Literature can use all these licensed materials with little worry (guess that's nothing but an assumption on my part though). But I imagine that the movie had a legal nightmare to go through to get what ever they did include into the works, and I'm sure a lot of the material couldn't be included.

Oh, and my Mom loves those cheesy made for TV SciFi movies. So Rampage is just about her favorite type of thing. And I'm sure that new one "Meg" is too.

RPO The Movie follows the broad paths of the book but that's about it. Different (more cinematically appealing) challenges, more for Artemis to do and Halliday's Journal replaced with a virtual library/museum.

Ultraman couldn't be used in the film because the rights are tied up in a legal dispute so there's no one to sign off on it. Apparently Disney refused to allow the rights to Star Wars. It sounds as though they got anything else they were really trying for although Spielberg intentionally kept references to his films at a minimum (which is a whole lot of the 80s) since he didn't want to make a homage to himself.

Spielberg said they refused, but then a few weeks later walked it back and said they were fine with it. From what I read while the movie was still in the promotional stages only Ultraman was a problem and everyone else was pretty okay with it. Granted, not the most reliable of sources.

Eh, who knows. Seems odd that they wouldn't have thrown a Millennium Falcon or X-Wing in there is they were able to (or Darth Vader/Boba Fett fighting on Planet Everyone-Fights-A-Lot)
