I actually like being on an underpopulated server...
I have 2-3 friends I regularly do things with. Level lowbie jobs; go randomly camp some NM; finish some obscure quest; go to some dungeon and kill stuff for a bit of exp, a bit of money drops, a bit of skillups, and a lot of fun.
No matter what we choose to do, it's free.
There's an insane exp camp for a duo around level 57; solo around 59-60 depending on the job. Few people use it because everyone's doing colibri in this range; but this camp is better than colibri. It's the Sauromugue Champaign[S] pet beetle camp next to the maw. There are two pets here: one at your level (on the high ground), and one you can pull from the low ground with a spell or ranged attack. Being pets, they die really fast; and two pops makes it hard to be limited by resummon time.
I've spent countless hours there, syncing to 55-60 with friends. I've only
seen that camp taken once, by a duo of Japanese BLUs. I haven't even seen a single BLM use the camp, although it should be BLM heaven.
Every place is free for us to use. Last Saturday, a friend gathered a few skilled people, we went to sky and fought Genbu. My first real Sky event. The first real Sky event for 4 of us, actually. A 6-people party - no need for a Sky LS. (And I got the shield to boot, yay.)
No competition on the pop items; no competition on the island. We're planning to practice on Genbu some more, then try and fight other Sky gods.
If our RL schedule allowed it, we'd get everyone Sea access. Or Captain rank. Or do Salvage. Or something.
We can't do Dynamis, or Einherjar, or kings, as a small group. I don't mind. There's plenty of other stuff to enjoy as is. The point is, I'm feeling like the place is ours, and we can do whatever we want.
Hell, if I wanted to do Dynamis (and I do, but I have a time-consuming job, so it's not happening), it would be easy enough to find a decent Dyna LS, even on Fairy.
The underpopulation is not limiting the enjoyment I'm getting from the game.
This is all going to change. I'm sure Sylph is very pleasant and everything, but I expect to find the 2006 world again, where every exp camp is taken, where random farmers are all over the place, where every semi-interesting NM is camped, where people are standing in line to pop Genbu. I expect losing a lot of this sense of freedom.
This has advantages too, of course. Maybe I'll at last find pickup people willing to climb non-boss floors in Nyzul Isle. Willing to do Assaults to rank up. Willing to do WotG nation quests. And of course, the economy will probably be in much better shape on a thriving server.
But still, I am going to miss Fairy and its tranquillity.
