My 0.00024BC has lost over 50% of its value since December making it worth a mere $2 from its heady highs of nearly $4.50

I'm working on a new PC build and camped out Micro Center for a reasonably priced Asus 1080 Strix -- "reasonable" meaning maybe $15 over MSRP. Beats the "100% over MSRP" rates from Newegg or Amazon though. The evening before I was at Best Buy and they said they had a few 1080 FE's coming in and I paid MSRP for one but then learned that the FE had cooling issues so went with the Asus. The FE is finally in today and I was originally thinking of trying to flip it and subsidize my build with an extra hundred bucks or two but it looks like the GPU market is cooling off. Craigslist and eBay filling up with both used cards and 'new' cards (assuming they're not just reboxed) that people either bought to flip or else just didn't get into their mining rigs yet. Probably make more sense to give the FE a tour from the pick-up counter to the returns counter and wash my hands of it.

Nvidia is all "we're trying to get cards into the hands of gamers and working with our retail partners" and AMD is like "So buy a card and mine some coins, stupid. Why you even have a GPU if you're not going to mine with it?"

Anyone buy RAM recently? That stuff is a mint now as well. Supposedly because every item on earth is using it these days and production can't keep up.

New build will feature an i5-8600K, Asus Z370-A Prime mobo, Asus 1080 Strix, 16GB RAM (3200), 500GB M.2 drive and then the old PSU, SSD and a couple HDDs from my current system. All stuffed in a Mastercase 5 with my old Corsair H100i v2 cooler. Reading up on installing the M.2 gave me headaches (SATA lanes, PCIe lanes, etc) but I'll figure it out.

I'm probably going to be in the market for a new laptop Christmas after next. Mines going to be in the Middle East for a third time soon, and some nights it struggles just to run MSPaint. And I love me some MSPaint.

So what kills off graphics advances in video games in the end? It's not the expansion of mobile gaming, or the decline of the home PC. It's not a lack of technological advance, and we never reached the limits of human perception. No, it's none of that. It the end it's people running algorithms to mine cryptocurrency for shady pyramid schemes who dry up the processor supply and push the prices out of reach of the common gamer.

Don't remember the pundits calling that one. Smiley: rolleyes

Doing the research to find out if your component choices will all work together without causing bottleneck can be a pain. But actually installing an M.2 drive is dead simple. Put in the stand off scr*w, plug the drive in, scr*w the drive down. Done. They can get stupidly hot though, which causes them to slow down significantly. Just about the only solution on the market is to add a heat sink. It doesn't do much, but it helps a little.

I use this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073RH58WN/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They have a few different colors available if you want to find one to match the rest of your components.

As to GPUs, you might want to head over to EVGA's website. They haven't had any available for immediate order, but you can put your name on a waiting list for the whichever model(s) you're looking for. They're pretty good about making sure you get what you want, it just may a take while. Pretty much all of the 1080s perform more or less the same, so cooling is the only reason to pick one over another. EVGA had a bit of problem with their early 1080s overheating, so the did a complete redesign of their coolers. They actually have the best coolers on the market now. Not that there's anything wrong with the Strix, Asus also makes a solid cooler.

Boring aside, one day over the Summer, I was having a bad day and decided to buy myself a new toy. I picked up an EVGA 1080ti FTW3 with a blue fan shroud. I sold the 1080 SC2 I was replacing on Ebay to fund most of the purchase. I wish I'd held on to the old card, I could have gotten double for it right now.

When it comes to RAM, you're just plain screwed. It's available, just much more expensive than it used to be. I'm using 2 16gb sticks of DDR4 right now. Last time I checked, they were selling for over a hundred dollars more than I paid for them last April.

Edit: Are you f*cking kidding me, "scr*w" is filtered. That's beyond stupid.

Well, I'm already set for a GPU. Hell, I'm technically set for two GPUs; I just need to decide if I'll return the second or try and flip it for a modest profit.

I figure the physical installation of the M.2 is easy enough, I just wasn't used to worrying about SATA/PCIe lanes and that sort of thing. Fortunately, my motherboard has a heat sink for the M.2 already attached which, from my reading, takes the temps down about 20C. RAM is just stupid but, unlike the crypto thing and graphics cards, doesn't seem to have any easy to finger culprit and I doubt will be changing any time soon.
