Hello all. I've been away from EQ for about 3 years now. I decided to play some again, so I created a new account and am strating from scratch. This account is just a free account.

I am tempted to login my old accounts (I had several level 100s on 3 different accounts), mainly just to pass along a few things to this new account. I don't plan to subscribe (at least for now), so I was wondering how much would get mangled when I login to those accounts without a subscription active.

Nothing gets "mangled." If your sub goes FTP you just won't be able to get the benefit of anything you've equipped which is classified "Prestige."

Very true. I lapsed to FTP and have characters where all gear and augs are purple - essentially playing naked. Not conducive to further play. One thing you might want to be aware of if you log in old characters: they refunded tons of AAs and raised the banked cap on AA. If you see a red message about AAs, stop. Open the AA window and spend any you might lose if you log out.

If you're over the stored AA cap, it will open the AA window for you automatically.

There is a bug in that code. Every time I log in certain characters it opens the AA window, tells me I need to spend points, and there is nothing. Nothing to spend, nothing to do, just more spam. A couple of ESCs and I'm out of their silly loop. All of this is non-all access issues which I know they aren't going to fix.

Spoiler alert: The issue is bankable AAs were raised over a cap that the code detects as flagged to expire on camp.

Fix: Refunded AAs never expire. Refunded AAs extend the bankable AA cap. Call them HAAs since they are +1s

Here's the actual deal.

You can bank AAs yourself, up to twice your level. No way to bank more than that.

EXCEPT: refunds. Refunds can bring your unspent bank as high as needed. When you next log in, you have to spend them down, so that's why the AA window opens automatically.

Now, here's the one catch: If you're F2P, you can't likely spend them down, because you're already above the 1000 (250?) AA limit. However, the system still lets you spend them anyway, down to 3 times your level. At that point, you can't spend any more, but you won't lose any (if you don't spend them down to under 3 times your level the first time you log in, you will lose them). So, you now have less than 3x your level, so you're safe, but more than 2x your level, which is the normal AA bank limit, so, EVERY SINGLE TIME you log in, the AA window will open, even though you can't spend any.

So, I logged in last night and can confirm that other than my merc crew being useless, there really wasn't much to note. I didn't even think to check AAs, so no news there. Hopefully there won't be any issues.

Taniger mentioned his gear being purple making him near naked. To clarify from what I observed, purple means the gear isn't prestige and still contributes to your stats, however there is an aug in that piece that is prestige, which makes just the augs stats not work. A yellow piece means the whole stats are not added making it useless.

Can't recall the color when it is fully functional, aug and all.

Thanks all for the input though. It was helpful!

This is exactly the situation. It's rather annoying, but not unlike things they have done in the past to annoy people into spending $. But stealthy me, I am so patient. I will wait for years until they run a membership sale once more. And they will. Or... warcraft will open classic servers and give DBG another run for the money. Actually not holding my breath for either to happen. We shall see.

I will check the gear color in a bit. But the gear itself was prestige, probably also the aug, so still all useless. But no complaints here, that's the current game, and I'm not paying. Kudos to them for letting me play :)

At high enough level you can make enough plat from gameplay loots to buy a krono for plat and essentially play for free. This does require doing some targeted pharming of stuff that can sell well via barter or in the Bazaar. Granted this is harder to do if you box and want all your toons to wear prestige. But I know boxers who earn kronos this way for their main and outfit their box crew in non-prestige gear, which is doable especially for casters who don't really require top gear to be reasonably effective.

No offense to anyone, but sometimes I think F2P players get obsessive about not paying a dime for the game they enjoy, and then go on and whine about the limitations of F2P. Like Taninger said, "kudos" to Sony/DBG for even offering F2P. Sure, it's a calculated strategy to get players back and tempt them to go full hog and renew their subs. While paying a whole year at a time might not be an affordable option for everyone, last time I checked that costs effectively about $10/month, you don't even need to pharm to buy kronos and all in all, it's a darn cheap price for the entertainment afforded by the game. Considering you can easily spend $10 or more to see one movie in a theater.

Bronze/ FTP/250AA with lowest Merc option. Silver/1000 AA limit and the slightly better Merc option (T3?), no prestige gear or RK spell upgrades allowed unless they bought the unlocks years ago. Which is pretty much legacy since Silver is no longer an option.

I had two paid accounts and bought at least eight Silver accounts and one spell unlock on my Silver shaman. I imagine maintaining the coding for all of that stuff is a nightmare.
